PERFECT WEEKEND: #5 WolfPack take four win at DuPage Invite

Impressive run includes four-set defeat of #2 Ridgewater

GLEN ELLYN, ILL. - The season's second tournament featured a marquee matchup Friday night, however, in the end the fifth-ranked Madison College volleyball team posted four impressive wins at the College of DuPage Invitational over the weekend. The WolfPack needed four sets to defeat Black Hawk College before doing the same against second-ranked Ridgewater College. Saturday saw the 'Pack sweep past Lincoln College and Kishwaukee College to push their current win streak to seven matches.

Match #1: #5 Madison College 3, Black Hawk College 1

In the tournament opener, Madison College tallied double-digit kills in each set against the NJCAA Division II Braves (1-1), en route to a season-high 53 kills and a 25-18, 25-27, 25-18, and 25-19 decision. The WolfPack hit better than a .300 attack percentage in the first and third sets, including a match-best .379 in the latter. They also finished tallied season-high totals with 51 assists and 92 digs in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Sophomore transfer from UW-Baraboo/Sauk County Lori Sanders paced the 'Pack with a season-high 14 kills, her first double-digit effort of the season. The middle blocker from Portage, Wisconsin, made just one hitting error in 23 attack attempts for a .565 hitting percentage. Outside hitter Megan Corcoran reached ten kills to go along with 20 digs for her first career double-double, while also hitting four aces. Three other players had seven or more kills for the WolfPack.

Setters Keely Brown and Olivia Darkow matched each other assists-for-assist with 22 each, a career-best for Darkow. The freshman from West Bend, Wisconsin, also served up three aces in the match. Kendra Nicolay had a career day, as well, racking up 28 digs. Freshman Mariah Capra led the defense above the net with four blocks, one better than Sanders and Paige Hostetler.

Match #2: #5 Madison College 3, #2 Ridgewater College 1

A highly anticipated battle between perennial powers and top five teams ended with Madison College pulling out a 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, and 25-23. The tightly contested match swung in favor of the WolfPack thanks to a stellar block that denied a season-high 14 Warriors (6-1) attacks. It aided in the 'Pack defeating the defending national runners-up for the fourth straight match and handing Ridgewater its first loss of the season.

Freshman Mariah Capra led the block party with six, followed by four a piece for Megan Corcoran and Lori Sanders. The back row did its part with 59 digs, featuring three players in double figures: Maddie Scalissi (18), Corcoran (12), and Keely Brown (10).

Offensively, Corcoran, a sophomore outside hitter, registered 18 kills and hit .375. First year Paige Hostetler hit at a .400 clip and tallied 13 kills, a season-high. Sophomore Samantha Jacobsen reached eight kills on a team-leading .467 attack percentage. Keely Brown steered the attack with 21 assists, six better than Olivia Darkow, who also had a match-high three service aces.

Match #3: #5 Madison College 3, Lincoln College 0

Saturday's first match may have ended in three sets, but it was no easy sweep with the WolfPack getting by NJCAA Division II Lincoln College, 25-21, 25-19, and 33-31. Madison College hitters finished with a .350 or better attack percentage in the opening sets, but were limited to a .140 percentage in the final set that required 16 additional points before coming to an end.

The WolfPack's backrow outplayed their Lynx counterparts with a 75-31 discrepancy in digs. First year libero Maddie Scalissi keyed that effort with 18 digs, marking the sixth time the Milton, Wisconsin, native has recorded double-digit digs. Another freshman, setter Olivia Darkow, was second with 16 digs, while sophomores Megan Corcoran and Keely Brown both had ten digs.

Corcoran was the top Madison College attacker with 14 kills, two better than former Bay Port HS athlete Paige Hostetler. The duo combined for nearly 58% of the team's kills. The offense benefited from 24 assists by Brown and 13 more from Darkow as Madison College defeated Lincoln (6-3) for the second straight year, and now boasts a 2-1 all-time record in the series.

Match #4: #5 Madison College 3, Kishwaukee College 0

Possibly as a reward for winning three challenging matches, the WolfPack's final contest of the tournament was by far its easiest with a 25-10, 25-11, and 25-17 sweep of NJCAA Division II Kishwaukee College (0-6). Madison College put up their highest overall match hitting percentage of the season at .475, capped by a first set that featured a .522 mark. For the match, the 'Pack totaled 45 kills and just seven errors on 80 attempts.

Eight different players recorded a kill in the balanced WolfPack offense, with six of the players reaching at least five kills. Outside hitter Paige Hostetler finished with a team-leading nine kills, hitting .643. Megan Corcoran had just five kills, but it came on six attempts for a career-best .833 attack percentage. Setting up the attack was the duo of Keely Brown and Olivia Darkow, with 21 and 15 sets, respectively. Mariah Capra had three of the 'Pack's eight aces.

Defensively, former Lodi HS athlete Kendra Nicolay collected 11 digs as the only player in double-figures to give Madison College its first win over the Kougars since 1996.

Up Next:

Madison College (9-2, 2-0) returns to North Central Community College Conference play on Tuesday, September 5 with a road trip to NJCAA Division II Triton College (1-1, 1-0). The matchup pits two undefeated teams atop the league standings, but the WolfPack have dominated the series with a 17-match win streak dating back to 2009. Even more impressive is the fact that the 'Pack has not dropped a single set during the streak, putting it at 51 consecutive. First serve in River Grove, Illinois is set for 6:00 p.m.
