MADISON, WISC. - Seeking revenge for an earlier loss at the N4C Dome Jamboree in March, the Madison College softball team took care of business Tuesday to pick up a pair of wins over the College of DuPage at Robert D. Goodman Softball Field. The WolfPack took the opener 7-2 and finished the day with a 7-3 decision over the Chaparrals, who had opened the season ranked #4 in the
NJCAA Division III Preseason Poll, to push their win streak to four games.
Game #1: Madison College 7, College of DuPage 2
In their first home North Central Community College Conference doubleheader at the new facility, the WolfPack grabbed the first lead of the day in the second inning. Freshman
Bailey Kratt dropped a double into centerfield to drive in
Riley Landenberger from second. The lead was short-lived, as the Chaparrals used a solo home run off of Landenberger, who got the start in the circle.
The long balls kept coming in the bottom of the third. After freshmen
Claire Brzenk and
Ashley Burg each reached safely with singles, fellow first year
Ashley Kniesel crushed the first WolfPack home run at new Goodman Softball Field. The three-run blast was the first of her career and the sixth of the season for Madison College, who now owned a 4-1 advantage.
Two innings later, the home team tacked on three more runs to pull away from DuPage. Burg led off the inning with a hard ground ball to the centerfield wall, and legged out a triple. The Slinger, Wisconsin, native scored on a sacrifice fly from
Hannah Jensen. The WolfPack then strung together five singles over the next six batters to generate two more scores for a 7-1 lead.
Landenberger ran into trouble in the seventh as she worked to close out the complete game. After a single and a double put two runners in scoring position with no one out, Jensen entered in relief to eventually finish off the five-run victory. Landenberger improved to 6-0 on the season, picking up her first victory in her last four appearances. The native of Roscoe, Illinois, went six innings and allowed two runs on six hits and a pair of walks. She also struck out three.
The freshman also helped her own cause with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate with a run scored and one driven in.
Ashley Burg and
Ashley Kniesel matched their classmate with three-hit performances. Both scored two runs, while Kniesel finished with a team-best three RBI.
Game #2: Madison College 7, College of DuPage 3
Madison College was aggressive at the plate early in game two, using three singles and an error by DuPage (12-14/4-4) to score twice.
Brenna Seeber and
Ashley Burg were both able to cross home on a long single to center by sophomore
Hannah Jensen.
Seeber and Burg were at it again in the second inning. The sophomore from Watertown, Wisconsin, ripped a triple to center that scored Bre Bollig after she reached on a hit by pitch. Then Burg's ground out to the right side was good enough for Seeber to move up 60 feet for a 4-0 edge.
The lead shrunk to just three heading into the bottom of third when the WolfPack again scratched two more runs on the board. First year catcher
Emme Hilbert made it 6-1 with a single through the right side for her first RBI's in six games.
After
Brooke Heck doubled in
Bailey Kratt in the fifth, Madison College again found trouble trying to close the game out. Starter
Emily Wiederholt walked the leadoff batter, who was joined on the bases by a second runner after an error at shortstop. With two outs recorded, Wiederholt gave up a two-run double to make it a four-run differential. After a walk put runners at the corners, Wiederholt was finally able to induce a ground ball out to third to pick up her second consecutive win, and the second complete game victory of her career.
Wiederholt (5-1) allowed eight hits, but was credited for just one earned run. The former Cuba City Cubans athlete walked four, but struck out seven to pull even for the team lead in K's on the season with 40.
Brenna Seeber led the offensive charge with a 3-for-4 effort after sitting out game one. She matched
Bailey Kratt for the team-lead in runs scored with two.
Hannah Jensen and
Emme Hilbert each drove in two runs.
Madison College continues N4C play with a road doubleheader at Joliet Junior College (9-14/2-4) on Thursday. The WolfPack defeated the Wolves
11-4 at the N4C Dome Jamboree to mark their 15th consecutive win in the head-to-head series. Game one has a first pitch time of 3:00 p.m., with the nightcap to follow at 5:00 p.m.
