JOLIET, ILL. - An outstanding pitching performance in the opener and a powerful hitting display in the finale guided the Madison College softball team to a Thursday sweep of Joliet Junior College. The WolfPack won by scores of 2-1 and 11-0 in five innings to earn their second consecutive sweep of a North Central Community College Conference opponent and extend their overall win streak to six games. And speaking of winning streaks, the 'Pack has not lost to the Wolves since March 2013, running off 17 straight victories.
Game #1: Madison College 2, Joliet Junior College 1
Game one featured a pitchers duel between Madison College's
Riley Landenberger and Joliet Junior College's Stacey Stanton. Neither pitcher allowed a run until the bottom of the fourth when the Wolves tallied their lone score against the Madison College freshman. After an error put a runner aboard, Landenberger gave up a single to right with two outs to make it a 1-0 game.
The WolfPack came right back with a manufactured run in the top of the fifth.
Bailey Kratt led off with a single, and advanced to third on back-to-back sacrifices from
Emme Hilbert and
Breanna Bollig. Sophomore
Brenna Seeber came through with a clutch infield single that evened the score.
Still 1-1 entering the seventh, Seeber came through, again, to provide the winning run. Another ground ball single with one out put the Watertown, Wisconsin, native on base, and a throwing error and steal moved her deep into scoring position. Freshman
Ashley Burg the ripped a RBI single to right for the go-ahead run.
Landenberger (6-0) worked a four-batter bottom half for the win, her second consecutive. The former Hononegah (IL) High School athlete surrendered a single unearned run on five hits and a season-high four walks, while also striking out four.
The WolfPack outhit JJC by an 8-5 differential, led by two-hit efforts from
Brenna Seeber and
Ashley Burg. Four others recorded hits, while Seeber was the lone player with a run scored and one driven in.
Game #2: Madison College 11, Joliet Junior College 0 (5 innings)
The circle saw another outstanding pitching performance in the nightcap as
Hannah Wienen tossed a two-hitter, however, it was the suddenly hot Madison College bats that exploded for the run-rule win, especially from
Hannah Jensen and
Katelin Gilbertson.
After Jensen singled in
Brenna Seeber for a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Gilbertson took her first cuts at the plate in the second. With a runner on and one out, the Onalaska, Wisconsin, native crushed her second career home run to make it 3-0. That lead grew to four-runs before the frame ended with an
Ashley Burg RBI single.
Gilbertson drew an intentional walk to start the fourth inning, and pinch runner
Samantha Yaeger came in to score when
Ali Braddock lined a single to left. Joliet Junior College (9-16/2-6) made a pitching change, however, the new hurler put two more runners on when Jensen ripped a double to center that plated Braddock and
Breanna Bollig to make it 7-0.
In the fifth inning, the WolfPack tacked on four more runs to get the early victory. The final push began with a solo home run to left from Gilbertson, marking her first career multi-homer game. Later in the inning, Burg drove in a run with a groundout to the right side, and Jensen upped her RBI total with a two-run double, this time to left.
Hannah Wienen (3-3) finished the game with a 1-2-3 effort in the fifth for her second straight win. The righty struck out six batters over five innings with just two walks to help the 'Pack to a 3-0 mark this season against the Wolves.
Despite
Katelin Gilbertson's two-HR outing, it was
Hannah Jensen who had the biggest numbers. The sophomore went 3-for-4 with a career-high five runs batted in. Gilbertson had three RBI, while
Ashley Burg tallied two. Three players, Gilbertson,
Ali Braddock, and
Breanna Bollig each had two hits and two runs scored.
Madison College (19-12/8-2) is back at Robert D. Goodman Softball Field on Saturday for a doubleheader against Region IV foe South Suburban College (16-7). The WolfPack and Bulldogs have split the four previous meetings between the two programs, including a split of last year's twin bill in Illinois. Game one will start at 12:00 p.m., with first pitch of the finale at approximately 2:00 p.m.
