MADISON, WISC. - Following pair of home losses on Saturday, the Madison College baseball team rebounded nicely with two key wins Tuesday over Region IV foe Moraine Valley Community College at Robin Roberts Field. The WolfPack escaped the opener with a 4-0 decision behind
Jack Eagan's one-hitter, and used a seven-run first inning to capture a 9-2 victory in the nightcap.
Game #1: Madison College 4, Moraine Valley Community College 0
Runs were at a premium in game one, and it was only partly due to
Jack Eagan's presence on the hill. The first year transfer from Indiana University carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning until the Cyclones hit a one-out double to right. It put runners at second and third, but Eagan closed the door on the complete game win with back-to-back fly outs to the outfield.
Madison College scored first after loading the bases in the opening inning on two singles and a walk.
Chris Lund hit into a double play, but it was good enough to allow
Sage Bruhl to score from third. Bruhl, a transfer from Stetson University, was at the forefront of the WolfPack's next scoring opportunity. After
Zach Bailey was hit by a pitch to lead off the third, Bruhl pulled a 3-2 offering down the foul line in right and just cleared the wall for a two-run homer, the first of the season and of his collegiate career.
The lead grew to 4-0 in the fourth when two walks and a pair of hit by pitches forced in a run. The final sequence saw sophomore
Drew Steinmetz take the hit and
Nick Blomgren score from third.
Eagan (6-0) finished with a career-high 11 strikeouts en route to his second complete game victory. The shutout effort dropped his ERA to 1.05 over 42-plus innings, while his strikeout total now stands at a team-best 57.
Bruhl's 2-for-4 day with two RBI and two runs scored led all offensive categories for the WolfPack.
Game #2: Madison College 9, Moraine Valley Community College 2
Free runs was the name of the game in the day's finale. After the Cyclones scored on two hits and an error in the top of the first against starter
Sam Lund, it was Moraine Valley (14-21) that truly struggled on the mound. A pair of walks sandwiched around a bunt single by
Garrett McGraw loaded the bases for
Carson Carmody, who tied the game at one with a run-scoring fielder's choice. After a walk of
Bryce Plate loaded the bases,
Caleb Hurt was hit by a pitch to force in a run.
Nick Blomgren followed suit with a hit by pitch of his own to bring home what proved to be the game-winning run. A
Zach Bailey single to left made it 4-1, and with the bases still loaded, MVCC pitching walked three straight batters to push the score to 7-1.
Neither team was able to score again until the last few innings.
Caleb Hurt's two-out, solo home run in the fifth was a no-doubter to centerfield that made it a seven-run differential. And after an error allowed MVCC to make it 8-2 in the top of the sixth, Madison College came back in the bottom with a two-out double by
Chris Lund that allowed
Drew Steinmetz to score the game's final run.
Sam Lund (6-1) picked up his sixth consecutive win by going five innings and surrendering one unearned run on three hits. The Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native struck out two and walked four. During his current win streak, Lund has allowed three earned runs on 29 hits in 33 innings on the hill. He's also struck out 38 batters and walked 18. Freshmen
Darren Strasburg and
Tyler Strzelczyk each worked a scoreless inning in relief.
In all the WolfPack were issued ten free passes for first base (eight walks and two hit batters). Lodi High School product
Garrett McGraw was the lone player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3. Hurt, from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, led the team with two runs scored and two batted in.

Madison College (27-12/7-3) hits the road to play in-state rival Milwaukee Area Technical College (4-21/1-11) in a Thursday doubleheader. The WolfPack swept the Stormers by a combined score of
16-0 in Madison on April 15 after field conditions forced the teams to flip-flop home dates. The rivalry remains rather one-sided with Madison College owning an 87-12 lead in the all-time series, with the past 37 meetings all going the way of the 'Pack - the second longest win streak in the series after a 45-game swing that spanned three decades. First pitch in Milwaukee is at 2:30 p.m., with game two set for an approximate start of 5:30 p.m.
