WolfPack split DH to conclude AZ trip with 6-6 record

Freshman Logan Michaels stays hot in loss to Pima, win over Williston State

TUCSON, ARI. - The final day of the Madison College baseball team's annual spring trip to Arizona consisted of a 4-2 loss to host Pima Community College, and a third win in two days over Williston State (ND) College, this time by a 15-4 final in six innings. The WolfPack posted a 6-6 record over their ten days in the desert, the most wins since the 2012 season (8-3) and the best winning percentage since the 2014 team (5-5/.500).

Game #1: Pima Community College 4, Madison College 2 (9 innings)

Madison College was unable to find enough offense to earn their first ever win against the Aztecs. Neither team scored over the game's first innings, though Pima left five runners stranded in that stretch, and then PCC broke through in the third.

Three singles in the first four batters of the inning against starter Connor Fedders to hold a 2-0 lead. The score remained unchanged until the top of the sixth. Cade Bunnell drew a lead off walk and Chris Lund drove him in from first with a triple to the centerfield wall. Lund, a former Stoughton High School athlete, came home on a sacrifice fly from Bryce Plate.

The Aztecs quickly regained the lead against reliever Riley Pelischek thanks to a triple of their own, followed by a single through the left side. The WolfPack nearly pulled even in the eighth with a runner on third and one away, but Nick Blomgren struck out and Logan Michaels grounded out to end the threat.

After adding an insurance run in the eighth, Pima (14-16) went 1-2-3 through the Madison College lineup in the ninth to seal the win, their eighth in nine head-to-head meetings with one tie.

Cade Bunnell and Logan Michaels each tallied a pair of hits, with Bunnell reaching base successfully in his four plate appearances after drawing two walks. Chris Lund had one run scored and one driven in.

Connor Fedders made his first career start and lasted four innings with two earned runs on four hits. The former Union Grove HS athlete walked five batters and struck out two. Riley Pelischek (0-2) took his second loss of the season, this time in a relief role. The righty surrendered two earned runs on five hits and three walks. He did strike out five.

Game #2: Madison College 15, Williston State College 4 (6 innings)

Madison College wrapped up their Arizona trip with their second run-rule win in as many days over the Tetons, and it was highlighted by the second home run in as many days for freshman Logan Michaels.

The scoring began in the top of the first when the Kian O'Brien raced across home on a wild pitch to mark the tenth game of the season in which the WolfPack scored first, and the fifth time they did so in the opening frame. The lead grew to 2-0 in the second when Carson Carmody singled in Michaels after the DeForest, Wisconsin, native led off the inning with an opposite field base hit.

Williston State was able to register a pair of runs and tie the game in their half of the second against starter Garrett McGraw, though both came on or after an error by shortstop Cade Bunnell.

The 'Pack responded in a big way in the third inning, plating six runs with two out on the scoreboard. The rally started with Carmody's second run driven in and proceeded to include two-run hits from Zach Bailey and Bunnell, with a run on a wild pitch sandwiched in between.

With a 9-4 lead heading into the sixth, Madison College got a big boost from its most consistent bat so far this season. Michaels hammered his second home run of the season, this one a two-run blast to left for an 11-4 edge. Two singles and three Tetons errors later and the WolfPack owned an 11-run lead. Righthander Matt Hamilton worked his second scoreless inning to close our the six-inning.

Logan Michaels finished a career-best 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two batted in. He leaves Arizona with a .560 batting average, 14 hits, and two home runs, tops on the team in all three categories. Kian O'Brien and Zach Bailey each matched Michaels by touching home three times and driving in a pair while going a combined 4-for-6. Cade Bunnell had a team-leading three RBI.

On the hill, Garrett McGraw (1-0) struck out six over four innings, and allowed two earned runs on seven hits and two bases on balls.Matt Hamilton did not surrender a hit in his two innings, and set down three batters via the K to help the WolfPack run their win streak against the Tetons (8-5) to five straight. They are now 25-4 all-time with the North Dakota-based school.

Madison College will travel back to Wisconsin on Saturday and resume their schedule on Wednesday, March 22 with a doubleheader at NJCAA Division I Kishwaukee College (4-8). The WolfPack owns a 27-21-1 record all-time against Kougars, who have won three of the last five meetings after talking two of three in 2016. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m., with the nightcap at 5:00 p.m. in Malta, Illinois.
