MADISON, WISC. - As their NJCAA Region IV Quarterfinal match turned into rout Saturday at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East, the Madison College men's soccer team shifted its focus from advancing past Milwaukee Area Technical College to one's players attempt to make history. As part of the 7-2 victory over the Stormers that sent the WolfPack into the semifinal round for a third consecutive year, sophomore
Toby Andrews put his name atop the program record book with a pair of goals that broke a 15-year-old school record for career goals scored.
Playing through periodic heavy rains, the two in-state rivals remained scoreless into the 24' when Madison College's
Jake Andrews was able to convert a
Shane Paterson pass for the game's first goal. The scoring strike is the sixth of the season for the sophomore midfielder, while Paterson notched his third assist in connecting with his fellow British national. Two minutes later
Jake Andrews set up freshman
Ian Nowell for his first career goal to make it a 2-0 advantage, which remained until halftime.
The second half opened with Paterson, a first year forward from Catterick Garrison, England, beating the MATC-Milwaukee goalkeeper for the third time in back-to-back games against the Stormers, this one coming in the 49'. Paterson's eighth goal of the season was assisted by
Toby Andrews, who would be involved in all five of the final goals scored. His second assist of the day came in the 61', setting up
Marco Peruzzo for an easy goal into a wide open net as they finished off a 2-1 breakaway opportunity. Peruzzo, a native of Vicenza, Italy, snapped an eight-match scoring drought with his second goal of the year, giving the WolfPack a 4-0 lead.
The first of two history-making goals for
Toby Andrews occurred three minutes later with an unassisted breakaway that saw the reigning N4C MVP beat the 'keeper for his 30th career goal to tie Patrick Houlihan (2000, 2002) for the program's all-time goals scored record. After assisting a
Casey Risch goal that pushed Madison College out in front by a 6-0 differential in the 67', Andrews struck again to move into a solo position atop the list of all-time goal scorers. The All-American and Cambridge, England, native notched career goal #31 in the 75' off an assist from freshman
Vital Nizigiymana to officially break the record. It took Andrews seven fewer matches than Houlihan to reach the 30-goal plateau. Andrews' seven-point effort against the Stormers also leapfrogged him past Houlihan's career record for total points with 73, four better than the previous mark of 69 points.
MATC-Milwaukee (3-12) did register a pair of late goals in the final ten minutes of the match to end the WolfPack's shutout bid. Goalkeeper
Blake Dehn was credited with three saves in the winning effort. Madison College held a 29-6 advantage in total shots, a 16-5 edge in shots on goal, and an 8-1 margin in corner kicks en route to their 12th consecutive win in the head-to-head series, which now stands at 40-15-2 all-time in favor of the 'Pack. It's also the second straight year Madison College has defeated their in-state rival in the postseason.
