Trapino double-double leads #3 WolfPack past DuPage

Sets up first place showdown in N4C with #2 RVC Wednesday

GLEN ELLYN, ILL. - Yet another monster first half sent the Madison College women's basketball team to a lopsided 76-48 win Saturday at the College of DuPage. The WolfPack, winners of seven straight games, jumped out to a 30-11 lead after the first quarter to remain perfect in North Central Community College Conference play, and set up a mid-season tussle atop the standings on Wednesday.

By the time the Chaparrals scored their first basket just over two minutes into the game, Madison College (15-3, 6-0) already owned an 11-0 lead that grew to a 19-point advantage with a 13-2 kick to end the opening quarter. The run grew to 23-2 when the WolfPack registered the first ten points of the second quarter, and would lead by as much as 33 before settling for a 49-18 advantage at the break. College of DuPage (5-11, 3-3) had no answer in the second half with the 'Pack on cruise control, extending their lead to 45 points at 65-20 with a little over four minutes left to play in the third quarter.

Playing with just six available players, every Madison College players saw at least 28 minutes of action. The WolfPack shot 45% (29-64) overall with three 3-pointers and a 15-for-22 effort at the free throw line. The visitors were also significantly better statistically in points in the paint (40-20), second chance points (14-4), rebounds (46-32), and steals (16-8). It all added up to a seventh straight win over DuPage.

Freshman guard Peyton Trapino logged her first career double-double with 20 points and a team-leading 13 rebounds, to go along with a team-best five assists. The former DeForest (WI) HS athlete fell two points shy of matching her career-high as she converted 8-of-13 tries, making her lone three-point attempt and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. Trapino extended her streak of double-digit scoring games to six in a row, during which she is shooting 59.7% and has boosted her season average from 10.5 to 12.1 points per game.

Matching Trapino for the team lead in points was sophomore Rachel Slaney, contributing 20 or more points for the 15th time this season. The All-American forward made 8-of-19 shots and 4-of-6 free throw attempts. Slaney fell one rebound (9) shy of reaching her ninth consecutive double-double. She also led the team with six steals.

Two other freshman scored in double-figures with Megan Corcoran and Macy Graf finishing with 18 and 13 points, respectively. Corcoran drained two of the WolfPack's three shots from long range, while Graf went 5-for-6 from the floor and 3-for-4 at the charity stripe in her first career start. The Jefferson, Wisconsin, native matched a career-high with seven rebounds and set a new high with four steals.

First place in the N4C will be on the line Wednesday when #3 Madison College travels to #2 Rock Valley College (19-3, 6-0) for a matchup of two teams with 6-0 league records. The WolfPack took two of three from the Golden Eagles last season and have won three of the past four meetings since dropping 11 straight from 2011 to 2015. All-time, Madison College owns a narrow 18-16 advantage, but are just 4-10 in regular season conference matchups since joining the league in 2009-10. Tip off is at 5:30 p.m. in Rockford, Illinois.
