MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College softball team finished the regular season with a dominating 12-3 win in five innings against Highland Community College (18-23) on Saturday at the Goodman Sports Complex. The win allowed the 2016 team to match the program record for wins at 33, set by the 2015 team.
After falling behind 2-0 in the top half of the first inning, the WolfPack were handed the lead by some shaky Cougars pitching. Madison College drew five walks, including three straight with the bases loaded to assume a 3-2 advantage.
The bats took over after that. In the second, sophomore
Cheyenne Holmes slugged her team-leading seventh home run, a two-run bomb to center that made it 5-2. The Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native has 18 career home runs at Madison College, with each one adding to her program record.
The WolfPack really pulled away in the third, plating six runs on three hits, three walks, and three errors to extend the advantage to 11-2. The lone RBI in the inning came from
Brooke Heck, who singled in
Samantha Yaeger. Heck, a freshman from Beaver Dam (WI) HS, will finish the regular season leading the team in hits (82), doubles (25), runs batted in (65), batting average (.480), and slugging percentage (..673). All currently stand as single season program records.
Madison College tacked on one more run before
Jenalee Wilson (18-6) allowed her third earned run of the game on ten hits while striking out three. Wilson ends the regular season with three straight wins, and victories in seven of her last eight outings. The Portage, Wisconsin, product capped the year by leading the 'Pack pitching staff in wins (18), innings pitched (139.0), earned run average (2.32), strikeouts (90), and opponent batting average (.258). Of those categories, Wilson's wins and innings pitched are single season records.
Sunday's previously schedule regular season finale at Sauk Valley Community College was cancelled.
Leo Kalinowski's club, which is receiving votes in the latest
NJCAA Division II Poll, concluded the 2016 regular season with a 33-20 record overall and 10-5 in league play to finish in second place in the North Central Community College Conference. They will await their seeding and postseason matchups, which will be announced Monday, May 2.
