Top-seeded WolfPack sweep quarterfinal series vs. Kishwaukee

Madison College to play Sauk Valley in Region IV Semifinal on Saturday

MADISON, WISC. - Playing as the #1 seed in the NJCAA Region IV Division II District B Tournament, the Madison College softball team hosted eighth-seeded Kishwaukee College for a best of three quarterfinal series Tuesday at the Goodman Sports Complex. The WolfPack swept the series with wins of 4-1 and 8-1 in games one and two to advance to the double-elimination portion of the tournament this weekend in Yorkville, Illinois. In the process, Leo Kalinowski's club set a new program record for wins in a season with 35, surpassing last year's record-setting mark of 33.

Game #1: #1 Madison College 4, #8 Kishwaukee College 1

The tournament's top seed grabbed an early lead against the Kougars, as leadoff batter Brenna Seeber drew a walk and scored two batters later on a RBI double to center by team batting leading, Brooke Heck.

Kishwaukee College, which reached the quarterfinals with an 8-0 win in five innings over ninth-seeded Elgin Community College in Monday's play-in game, evened the score in the third against freshman hurler Hannah Jensen. The righthander from Watertown, Wisconsin, hit the first batter of the inning and gave up a run-scoring double to center two batters later.

But that would be it for the visitors in game one, as Jensen retired ten of the next 12 batter's faced. She finished with five hits and one run allowed over seven innings.

Meanwhile, the WolfPack offense regained the lead quickly in the bottom of the third with two runs on two hits, a walk, and an error. Seeber again got it going, this time with a double, eventually scoring on an error by the second baseman. The score went to 3-1 when as Jensen helped her own cause with a run-scoring single that plated Heck.

The final insurance run came in the sixth as Kiana Smith followed back-to-back single with a one-out double to center, bringing in Meredith Holt for a 4-1 advantage.

Madison College tallied seven hits, led by a 2-for-3 effort from Brenna Seeber. The other freshman from Watertown scored two of the team's four runs. Brooke Heck finished with one hit, one run, and one run driven in.

Game #2: #1 Madison College 8, #8 Kishwaukee College 1

Needing a win to close out the best of three series in as few innings as possible, the WolfPack found itself in a scoreless tussle for most of the day's second game. Sophomore ace Jenalee Wilson held the Kougars in check through four innings, scattering three hits and twice pitching out of a runner on third situation.

Kishwaukee College (14-36-1) broke through first in the top of the fifth. A two-out double with a runner at second made it a 1-0 lead for the visitors. It would be the only lead the Kougars owned all day, and it would last into the bottom of the sixth.

Limited to just two hits through five innings, Madison College flexed its muscle at the plate, and did so in a big way with eight runs on seven hits. Sophomore Cheyenne Holmes made the biggest statement, as she followed Brooke Heck's lead off double with a two-run blast over the centerfield wall for a 2-1 lead the WolfPack would never relinquish. Pinch hitter Taylor O'Leksy then singled in a run, as did Samantha Yaeger, to make it 4-1. Breanna Bollig added a pair of runs with a two-RBI double to left, and B. Bollig capped the scoring by racing home after an error in left field on a single off the bat of Holmes.

Jenalee Wilson (19-6) closed out her fourth straight win with a four-batter seventh inning. The Portage (WI) HS product struck out nine batters - her second highest total this season - and allowed six hits and one run in her seven innings of work.

Cheyenne Holmes paced the offense, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Her home run was her team-leading eighth of the season, giving the Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native the top two single season home run totals in program history after hitting 11 bombs last spring.

Seven other players also registered a hit, with Breanna Bollig also driving in multiple runs with two.

Madison College (35-20), winners of three straight, advances to the double-elimination portion of the NJCAA Region IV Division II District B tournament, where they will face fourth-seeded Sauk Valley Community College (18-28-1) in the semifinals. The Skyhawks swept fifth-seeded Black Hawk College in the quarterfinals by scores of 8-0 and 6-5. Madison College and Sauk Valley did not play during the regular season, as they twice had doubleheaders rained out. The other District B semifinal pits second-seeded Illinois Valley Community College against third-seeded Carl Sandburg College.

The Region IV Division II Tournament will run Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8 in Yorkville, Illinois. A rain date of Monday, May 9 will be used if necessary.
