WolfPack salvage late win with 7th inning rally at South Suburban

Danielle Savignac homers in Madison College doubleheader split

SOUTH HOLLAND, ILL. - The Madison College softball team opened the final week of the 2016 regular season by splitting a non-conference doubleheader with South Suburban College on Monday. The Bulldogs came from behind to steal the opener 5-4, while the WolfPack led start to finish in a 6-4 decision in the nightcap.

Game #1: South Suburban College 5, Madison College 4

Madison College held a 4-3 lead after five innings in game one of the twin bill as they looked to extend a three-game win streak. To that point, freshman Hannah Jensen (10-10) had allowed three runs and five hits to the Bulldogs. Then in the bottom of the sixth with one on and one out, the SSC third baseman and the number six hitter sent a Jensen offering beyond the centerfield fence, a two-run blast that gave the home team a 5-4 advantage.

Now facing their final at bats, the WolfPack got a two-out double and a walk to put pressure on the opposing pitcher and defense, however, freshman Meredith Holt popped out on the infield to end the game.

The game began with the 'Pack seizing an early 1-0 lead behind Brooke Heck's RBI double. But the Bulldogs answered with two runs of their own in the first and another run in the third to go up 3-1.

In the fourth, Madison College evened the score with two more RBI two-baggers. Jordan Bell ripped the first to left field, scoring Jensen, who led off the inning with a double. Three batters later, Kiana Smith also hit a double to left, brining in Bell for a 3-3 tie.

An inning later, the visitors grabbed their first lead at 4-3 on three consecutive singles by Heck, Cheyenne Holmes, and finally Jensen.

Hannah Jensen finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and another driven in. The Watertown, Wisconsin, native also finished as the pitcher of record, taking the loss despite giving up four earned runs and eight hits in six innings.

Brenna Seeber, Heck, and Smith also tallied a pair of hits in the game. Of the 11 total hits for Madison College, five went for extra bases and four produced runs.

Game #2: Madison College 6, South Suburban College 4

Though it was close throughout, Madison College made certain to get out of town with a win in leading the finale from start to finish and ending with an exclamation point.

The WolfPack jumped out to a 2-0 edge in the top of the first inning on two singles, a double, and a hit by pitch. Brenna Seeber opened the game with an infield single and scored on Cheyenne Holmes' single to left. Designated hitter Hannah Jensen followed with yet another double on the day, plate Brooke Heck who had been hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.

After South Suburban College (30-12) got one run back in the home half, Madison College (32-20) went back to work in the second with Seeber turning a two-out walk into her second run scored of the game. The freshman from Watertown, Wisconsin, advanced on Breanna Bollig's single and scored on another by Heck to make it 3-1.

Leading 3-2 after three innings the WolfPack were handed a 4-2 advantage with a Bulldogs error in the top of the fourth, and made it 5-2 in the fifth when Bell touched home courtesy of freshman Danielle Savignac's sacrifice fly.

But SSC kept it interesting with two runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the sixth against sophomore ace Jenalee Wilson.

In need of an insurance run to help close out a 32nd win - one shy of matching the program record set last season - Savignac smashed a solo home run to centerfield to make it 6-4. It marked the first collegiate home run for the former Wauwatosa West (WI) HS standout.

Jenalee Wilson (17-6) ended the game with a four-batter bottom of the seventh for her second straight win and the 11th in her last 14 starts. She fanned three and allowed two earned runs on ten hits.

Brenna Seeber reached base in all four of her plate appearances, collecting two hits, two walks, and two runs scored. Savignac was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Hannah Jensen also had two hits and a RBI.

Madison College, which played nine games over five straight days, is idle on Tuesday and returns to the diamond Wednesday at Elgin Community College (12-16). The WolfPack and Spartans will play just one game as a make up from a rescheduled game on April 2. First pitch in Elgin, Illinois, is at 3:00 p.m.
