WolfPack walks off twice in sweep of Waubonsee

Late rallies push win streak to five games

MADISON, WISC. - Thursday's non-conference doubleheader against Waubonsee Community College provided plenty of late-game heroics as the Madison College softball team earned not one, but two, walk-off wins Thursday at the Goodman Sports Complex. The victories came with identical 5-4 scores and elevated the WolfPack's current win streak to five games.

Game #1: Madison College 5, Waubonsee Community College 4

As would be the storyline throughout the afternoon, the Chiefs were able to get to the Madison College starting pitcher early to grab the lead. In the opener, sophomore Jenalee Wilson allowed four runs - one coming in the first inning, and three in the second - on six hits and an error.

Wilson settled in and kept the score at 4-0 through three-and-a-half innings, when the WolfPack offense finally busted through. Three straight singles to start the bottom of the fourth by Brooke Heck, Cheyenne Homes, and Hannah Jensen loaded the bases and a one-out walk of Meredith Holt drove in the inning's lone score.

Brenna Seeber's lead off single in the home half of the fifth eventually led to another run when a Holmes ground ball to the left side was enough to score Seeber from third.

After a scoreless sixth, the WolfPack was down to it's final chance in the bottom of the seventh. Pinch hitter Danielle Savignac began the rally with a lead off double to left. Seeber then drew a walk, and upon her attempt at stealing second, an error by the Waubonsee second baseman allowed pinch runner Samantha Yaeger to cross home. Now trailing 4-3 and with the tying run at second, Breanna Bollig ripped a single to center. The next batter, Brooke Heck, also single to center, driving in Seeber to even the game at 4-4 with no outs and the winning run just 60 feet away.

Holmes, a sophomore from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, played the role of hero, driving a pitch to right field for the walk-off RBI single that scored Bollig and gave the 'Pack the win.

Breanna Bollig, Heck, Holmes, and Jensen - batter two through four in the lineup - each had two hits, accounting for eight of the WolfPack's ten. Seeber, who stole three bases in the game, scored a team-best two runs, while Holmes was the lone player with two RBI.

Jenalee Wilson (15-5) allowed just three more hits after the first two innings. She finished with three earned runs, a base on balls, and four strikeouts for her fourth consecutive win.

Game #2: Madison College 5, Waubonsee Community College 4

A little déjà vu played out in the second game as Waubonsee Community College (25-30) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead against freshman starter Elizabeth Wahl. The Chiefs plated two runs in the first inning on a hit, a walk, and an error. Another walk, followed by a double, and back-to-back singles opened the second inning, forcing coach Leo Kalinowski to turn to his bullpen early.

Fellow first year hurler Hannah Jensen took over in the circle to neutralize the remaining threat, and scatter four hits the rest of the game.

Once again it remained 4-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning when Madison College (28-17) finally solved the Waubonsee pitching. Jensen helped her own cause with a run-scoring double to left that brought in Brooke Heck with two outs.

The WolfPack would tie the game at four in the fifth, and doing so again with two outs on the board. With runners at first and second, Heck singled to right to score Summer Zachow, who opened the inning with a single. Aggressive running on the play left a pair of base runners in scoring position, and Cheyenne Holmes took advantage. Her single back up the middle brought in two and made it 4-4.

Another scoreless sixth inning, followed by a three-up-three-down for Jensen in the seventh, Madison College found some magic in the last at bat. It began with a Heck double and followed with successive bunt singles from Holmes and Bailey Kratt to load the bases. After a fielder's choice ground ball to short cut down the lead runner at home, Meredith Holt ended yet another dramatic win with a single to left that scored Holmes for a second straight walk-off victory.

The WolfPack out-hit the visitors 14-8, led by four players with two hits each. Heck's two-hit game also included a pair of runs scored. Meanwhile, Holmes, for a second straight game, was the lone player with two runs batted in. She has driven in a run in ten straight games and 22 of the last 23.

Hannah Jensen (9-8) earned a second straight win with a four-hit, four-strikeout effort over six innings of relief. Wahl, who did not factor in the decision, tossed just one inning and surrendered four runs - three of which were earned - with four hits and two walks.

Madison College continues an extended home stretch Friday with top-ranked and North Central Community College Conference front-runner Rock Valley College (37-8, 11-1). The WolfPack is 10-2 in league play and lost the only prior meeting with the Golden Eagles 7-6 at the N4C Dome Jamboree on March 4. First pitch of the doubleheader at the Goodman Sports Complex is set for 3:00 p.m.
