MADISON, WISC. - Entering Friday's doubleheader with Rock Valley College, a make up from Tuesday's rainout, the Madison College softball team needed to win both games to claim the program's first conference championship. Unfortunately for the WolfPack, the Golden Eagles swept the twin bill, taking game one in six innings by a 10-2 final and the nightcap 6-1 at the Goodman Sports Complex.
Game #1: Rock Valley College 10, Madison College 2 (6 innings)
The day's opener started out even, as two of the top teams in the N4C both plated a pair of first inning runs.
Brenna Seeber and
Brooke Heck both reached base with single, and with two outs, freshman pitcher
Hannah Jensen did some damage with her bat. The Watertown, Wisconsin, native doubled to centerfield to drive in both runners.
Madison College had a chance to grab the lead in the third as
Breanna Bollig, Heck, and Jensen all singled to load the bases with two outs. The threat ended when
Bailey Kratt flew out to right field.
It stayed even at two until the third when RVC used three straight singles, followed by a double, a walk, and a fielder's choice to tack on three more runs.
The Golden Eagles added a solo home run in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the fifth to make it 7-2. The run rule took effect in the sixth after the visitors scored three more runs on three hits and a walk.
Meanwhile, the WolfPack offense managed just two more hits after the third inning. Jensen finished 3-for-3 with two RBI. Heck and
Breanna Bollig also had multi-hit games.
In the circle,
Hannah Jensen (9-9) fell to .500 on the season. She allowed 14 hits and issued three walks, while seven of the ten runs scored were earned
Game #2: Rock Valley College 6, Madison College 1
The defending national champions (NJCAA Division III) kept the momentum going in the second game despite pitcher
Jenalee Wilson entering the contest with a four-game winning streak. After a perfect first inning, the sophomore would get tagged for three runs in the second, including a solo home run, and two more runs in the third. Wilson settled in from there to keep the Golden Eagles in check.
Offensively, the WolfPack put a runner on base in every inning, but failed to push a base runner past second. That changed in the bottom of the sixth with the 'Pack down 5-0..
Hannah Jensen and
Taylor O'Leksy each singled, and with two outs, an error on the Rock Valley College (32-8, 13-1) pitcher on a ball off the bat of
Samantha Yaeger resulted in Jensen racing home to end the shutout.Â
Jensen paced the lineup with two of the team's seven hits and the lone run scored.
Jenalee Wilson (15-6) lost for the first time in over a week, giving up four earned runs on 11 hits and with three strikeouts.
Madison College (28-16) finished out N4C action with a 10-4 record and a half game better than the College of DuPage for second place behind RVC. The WolfPack turns its attention to Saturday's Tri-State Classic at the Goodman Sports Complex. The action begins at 10:00 a.m. as the 'Pack takes on McHenry County College (8-17) out of Illinois, and then Century Community & Technical College from Minnesota at 2:00 p.m.
