WolfPack grab third straight doubleheader split

Sixth Holmes HR breaks open close game in 9-5 WolfPack win

GALESBURG, ILL. - For the third day in a row the Madison College softball team split a doubleheader, this time doing so against Carl Sandburg College on Saturday afternoon. The WolfPack lost the opener 9-3, but answered a Chargers rally with some late heroics to win game two, 9-5.

Game #1: Carl Sandburg College 9, Madison College 3

The homestanding Chargers seized control of the day's first game with a two run first inning against freshman Hannah Jensen, who also surrendered two runs in the third inning for a 4-0 deficit. In those two frames, Jensen allowed a single and a double to successive batters twice.

Madison College cut the deficit in half on a two-RBI triple to left by Breanna Bollig, plating Kiana Smith and Brenna Seeber for a 4-2 score in the fifth.

It remained that way until the bottom of the sixth, when CSC got to Jensen for five more runs on five hits and an error.

The final tally of the day for the WolfPack came in the seventh when transfer Taylor O'Leksy crushed a pinch-hit home run to left to lead off the inning. The Monroe, Wisconsin, product, who played at Highland Community College last spring, has two home runs, tying her for second on the team.

Breanna Bollig collected a team-high two hits and two RBI, however, the Chargers held an 11-7 advantage in the hit column.

Hannah Jensen (7-8) took her second straight loss, giving up nine runs, including four earned, in six innings. She struck out four in the process.

Game #2: Madison College 9, Carl Sandburg College 5

Game two was a game of runs as Madison College (24-17) raced out to a 5-0 lead, only to have Carl Sandburg (20-19) rally right back to tie it at five. And that was just the first three innings.

The WolfPack opened the game with one run in the first as Cheyenne Holmes drove in Breanna Bollig on a single to left. In the second, the 'Pack tacked on four more runs with four hits. Danielle Savignac, Breanna Bollig, and Brooke Heck each recorded RBI singles.

All five runs allowed by starter Elizabeth Wahl came in the bottom of the third to even the score. The inning featured five hits, including a lead off double, two walks, two steals, and an error.

The score stayed locked at 5-5 until Jordan Bell's double to center in the fifth brought in pinch runner Lindsey Bollig for a 6-5 lead.

Madison College added insurance runs in the sixth that made it 9-5, and they all came on one swing of the bat. With two aboard and two down, Cheyenne Holmes drove the ball beyond the left field wall for her second home run in as many days and her team-leading sixth of the season.

The late rally from a tie game gave relief pitcher Jenalee Wilson (13-5) the win as she pitched the final three innings in shutout fashion. Wilson gave up just one hit and struck out two while extending her scoreless innings streak to 15 innings. Elizabeth Wahl allowed earned runs on six hits and two walks in her four innings in the circle. The freshman righthander has not factored in the decision of her last three starts.

In scoring nine runs, the WolfPack churned out 15 hits, more than doubling that of the Chargers. Holmes and Seeber each went 3-for-4, while three other players each recorded two hits. Holmes drove in four runs, increasing her season total to 41. Breanna Bollig made a permanent indentation at home plate, scoring three times in the win.

Madison College is 5-5 during this busy week of five doubleheaders in six days. They will play one more on Sunday back in Madison as Black Hawk College-Moline visits the Goodman Sports Complex. The Braves are 10-12 on the season. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
