SWEEP! WolfPack end busy week with pair of home wins

Wilson extends scoreless innings streak to 22

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College softball team capped a busy week of six doubleheaders in seven days with a non-conference sweep of Black Hawk College-Moline at Goodman Sports Complex on Sunday. The WolfPack won in come-from-behind fashion in the opener, 6-5, then used another shutout performance from Jenalee Wilson to secure a 4-0 victory in the second game.

Game #1: Madison College 6, Black Hawk College-Moline 5

Tied at four entering the fifth inning, both the Braves and WolfPack bats went to work in search of the game's winning run. For Black Hawk College-Moline, a two-out RBI double to center provided the go-ahead run against Madison College starter Hannah Jensen.

However, the 'Pack answered with some big swings in the bottom half. It started with Jensen, as the freshman from Watertown, Wisconsin, helped her own cause with a home run to left field to lead off the inning. The homer is the first of Jensen's collegiate career and knotted the game back up at 5-5. Feeling the momentum, fellow freshman Lindsey Bollig ripped a triple to right field in the next at bat, putting the go-ahead run just 60 feet from home. Meredith Holt put a third straight big swing on the ball, sending a deep fly out to right that allowed Bollig to tag up and score.

Now pitching with a late lead, Jensen finished off the Braves with a 1-2-3 seventh for the one-run victory.

Hannah Jensen (8-8) struggled in the circle early, giving up four runs over the couple of innings. A lead off double, an error, and two singles in the first put BHC-M ahead 3-0. They made it 4-1 in the second with a single, two productive groundouts, and a second error committed by the WolfPack defense.

After scoring in the first when Cheyenne Holmes singled in Brooke Heck, the 'Pack answered the bell in the third with a three-spot to tie the game. Four straight singles by Brenna Seeber, Breanna Bollig, Heck, and Holmes contributed to the quick rally, striking the Braves before an out was recorded.

Holmes registered a team-best three runs batted in, and was one of three players - along with Heck and Jensen - to go 2-for-3 in the game. Heck paced the team with two runs scored.

For Jensen the pitcher, her final line score was seven innings, seven hits, five runs, three earned, and three strikeouts. The win snaps a personal two-game losing streak.

Game #2: Madison College 4, Black Hawk College-Moline 0

Game two was all about the continued dominance of sophomore righthander Jenalee Wilson. The Portage, Wisconsin, native entered the game with a streak of 15 consecutive scoreless innings and made sure to add on seven more.

Wilson (14-5) limited the Braves to four hits - two of which came in the final inning - and only once allowed an opposing base runner past second. She struck out two batters and hit two others in earning her third consecutive game and eighth in her last ten starts.

At the plate, Madison College (26-17) was led by left fielder Breanna Bollig, who went a season-best 4-for-4 with a run scored and another driven in. Brooke Heck was the only other player with multiple hits and a team-high two RBI.

The WolfPack grabbed the game's first lead against Black Hawk College-Moline (10-14) with two runs in the third. Brenna Seeber scored on a perfectly executed double steal before Heck doubled in Breanna Bollig to make it 2-0.

It became 4-0 in the sixth as Bollig singled to left to drive in Jordan Bell and keep the bases loaded. One batter later, Heck was hit-by-pitch, forcing Summer Zachow to notch the final run tally.

Madison College, winners of three straight, will take an off day on Monday before returning to North Central Community College Conference play on Tuesday against league front-runner and #1 (NJCAA Division III) Rock Valley College. The Golden Eagles are 31-8 on the season and own a 12-1 record in the N4C, while the WolfPack is two games back in second place at 10-3. RVC won the lone prior meeting this season 7-6 at the N4C Dome Jamboree on March 4. First pitch at the Goodman Sports Complex is at 3:00 p.m.
