Kishwaukee rallies past #2 WolfPack in the ninth

Madison College drops resumed game in extra innings

MADISON, WISC. - In an impromptu addition to the schedule, Madison College baseball hosted Kishwaukee College at Robin Roberts Field to resume a tied game and get in another full nine innings while the weather cooperated. The NJCAA Division I Kougars would get the better of the WolfPack, winning the resumed game 2-1 in eight innings and then rallying for an 8-5 win in the second contest.

After the completion of the resumed game, the WolfPack and Kougars retook the diamond for one last battle, this time with Madison College as the home team. Neither team found much offense to start, combining for just three hits over the first three innings.

Kishwaukee (12-6) broke through in the fourth against Sam Lund, scoring three runs on three hits. Three straight singles with one out loaded the bases and two of the three runs came in on a passed ball and wild pitch. The lead grew to 5-0 when the Kougars followed a one-out walk with a home run to left.

The WolfPack trailed until the bottom of the seventh. Simon Maurice opened the scoring with a single to center that drove in Nate Schmidt, and an error by the Kishwaukee shortstop on the next batter allowed Drew Steinmetz to touch home for a 5-2 deficit. Then with runners at the corners, first year shortstop Kian O'Brien smashed a three-run shot over the left field wall to even the score. It was the first career home run for the Madison La Follette product.

Reliever Theo Denlinger kept the game square at 5-5 until finding himself in trouble in the top of the ninth. A one-out double to left meant coach Mike Davenport would turn to his bullpen and bring in lefthander Jared Horton. Looking for his first win of the season, Horton (0-1) issued a walk to the first batter faced before serving up a three-run homer to left by the Kougars shortstop to make it 8-5.

Needing a rally in the bottom half, Madison College (7-10) brought the tying run to the plate with two down, but Bryce Plate stranded two runners with a ground out to first to end the game.

Kian O'Brien led the hit parade at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. O'Brien finished with a home run and a double, the lone extra base hits for the WolfPack. Chris Lund added a pair of hits, part of nine in all by Madison College.

On the hill, Sam Lund allowed four earned run and five hits in his five innings of work. The Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native struck out five batters, as well. Theo Denlinger went 3 1/3 innings, surrendering one run on four hits. Jared Horton pitched the final 2/3 of an inning and took the loss on two runs and one hit allowed.

Madison College posted a 1-2 mark against Kishwaukee and is 3-2 since returning from Arizona. The WolfPack will put a 2-0 N4C record on the line Tuesday with a doubleheader against Triton College in River Grove, Illinois. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
