MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's basketball team refused to let Wednesday night's North Central Community College Conference game with the College of DuPage turn into a classic "trap game" story, controlling the first half en route to a 68-50 win inside Redsten Gym. The top-ranked WolfPack will now take a six-game win streak into Saturday's rematch with #5 Rock Valley College.
Leading by nine after the first quarter, Madison College (21-1, 6-1) imposed their will on the Chaparrals with a 14-5 run to start the second quarter. The run featured a 4-of-5 shooting effort from beyond the arc, including a stretch of three straight in a 55-second window and two from freshman
Carly Johnson. It propelled the WolfPack to a 41-20 lead at the half and an eventual sweep of the season series against the College of DuPage (8-13, 1-7). It's also the sixth consecutive win in the head-to-head series for Madison College.
Despite the relatively easy win, it was not the smoothest performance for coach
Jessica Pelzel's club. The 'Pack matched a season-high with 24 turnovers, while also shooting less then 37% overall and from distance. Madison College struggled at the free throw line, converting just 11-of-22 tries. Those struggles were matched by the visiting Chaparrals, who finished with 25 turnovers, shot under 33% from the floor with only two 3-pointers, and a 16-for-23 mark at the charity stripe.
Madison College took advantage of all the missed shots, nearly doubling the competition in the rebound department by a 55-29 margin. Even more impressive was the 27 total offensive rebounds, extending offensive possessions and leading to 13 second chance points.
The effort on the glass helped freshman
Rachel Slaney to her team-leading seventh double-double of the season. The forward registered 15 points and season-high-matching 15 rebounds, with ten of those boards coming on the offensive end.
Jenna Endres knocked down three long-distance shots on 11 attempts outside the arc and finished with 11 points to keep her double-digit scoring streak in tact - now at 32 games. Nine other players scored, including nine points from
Kaitlyn Kast and eight more by
Carly Johnson.
Kast also distributed a team-high five assists. Megan Petty ended the night with six points and nine rebounds.
Madison College remains home for a fun-filled weekend with the
10th Annual Jam the Gym Alumni Weekend celebration. Highlighting the event will be a NJCAA Division III Top-5 showdown between the #1 WolfPack and #5 Rock Valley College (18-6, 7-1). The teams are separated by a half-game atop the N4C standings with just a handful of games remaining. The Golden Eagles narrowly defeated the 'Pack
66-55 when they first met in Rockford, Illinois, on January 13. RVC has dominated the series of late, taking 12 of the last 13 meetings; however, the two teams did split last year and the all-time tally is currently even at 16 wins a piece. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. and will be preceded by men's and women's alumni games starting at 10:00 a.m.
