Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Balanced offense drives WolfPack to third in-state win

Five score in double figures in defeat of Western Tech

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College men's basketball team was remarkably efficient and balanced offensively Wednesday, and it all added up to a lopsided 95-60 defeat of in-state opponent Western Technical College in Redsten Gymnasium. In reaching their second highest scoring output of the season, the WolfPack saw five players reach double-figures while nearly scoring the same amount of points from the paint as from beyond the arc.

Leading from start to finish, Madison College (5-5) found its first double-figure lead almost halfway through the first half when freshman Stavon Staples made it 21-11 with 11:38 to play with a jumper. That was part of a 10-0 run that surged the home team to a 52-point first half and a 21-point advantage at the break.

To put the game away and secure a third consecutive win over the Cavaliers (2-5), the 'Pack went on a 13-2 burst over five minutes of the second half to extend their lead to 88-57 with 4:36 to go in the game. Madison College scored 40 points in the paint and 36 from 3-point territory en route to a 53-percent (37-69) effort overall. They were 12-for-23 (52%) from distance and 9-of-12 (75%) at the free throw line.

Freshmen Tyree Young and Stavon Staples shared top billing with 15 point each. Young, and native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, did most of his damage off the dribble, connecting on 7-of-12 shots from the floor, while Staples hit half of his six field goals from deep. Young, who has scored ten or more points in five of the last six games, also finished with four assists, tying Zach Adkins and Paul Schmelzer III for the team lead in that category. For Staples, a former Madison East (WI) HS athlete, it's the fourth time in five games he has reached the ten-point plateau.

Two more first year players, Jezzriah Burton and Brandon Neuberger, tallied 13 points a piece. For Neuberger it marks a career-high and his first collegiate double-digit scoring game. The Marshall, Wisconsin, native was a perfect 5-for-5 shooting the ball, including going 3-for-3 outside the three-point arc. Burton also did some damage with long range bombs, hitting three of his five attempts from distance to help the WolfPack match their season high for three-pointers made in a game.

Rounding out the scoring was Paul Schmelzer III with a dozen points and a team-best eight rebounds and four assists in helping improve the WolfPack's advantage in the all-time series with WTC to 56-31. The team's leader in three-pointers made on the season struggled with a 1-for-6 effort in that category.

Winners of three of their last four, Madison College has a short turnaround as the Loras College (IA) JV visit the capital city on Friday night. The game will mark the first ever meeting between the two programs and the first official game against a NCAA Division III opponent since a 78-64 win over College of St. Scholastica in December 2007. Game time is at 7:30 p.m. with live video coverage available at MadisonCollege.TV.
