WolfPack men drop pair at Anoka-Ramsey Tournament

Madison College returns home to play Sauk Valley Tuesday

COON RAPIDS, MINN. - The Madison College men's basketball team suffered a pair of close setbacks playing in the Anoka-Ramsey Community College Tournament over the weekend, falling to host Golden Rams, 100-85, on Friday and to St. Cloud Technical & Community College by a 79-75 final on Saturday. The WolfPack is now 2-3 on the season.

Game #1: Anoka-Ramsey Community College 100, Madison College 85

After a Deshawn Black jumper in the paint brought Madison College to within one at 77-76 with 6:45 remaining, Anoka-Ramsey (3-0) went on an 17-0 run over the next 3:18 to secure the home win. The back-and-forth contest saw three lead changes and eight ties before the Golden Rams late flurry following a 47-43 lead at the half.

The WolfPack connected on 42% of their shots, hitting a dozen 3-pointers along the way, however, Anoka-Ramsey was slightly better at 44% and with 17 triples. The 'Pack also lost the rebound battle by a 54-39 differential, which included 15 offensive boards that lead to 19 second chance points for the opposition. Madison College had just ten second chance points, but made up for it with ten more points in the paint than the Rams.

Three players tied for team-high honors offensively, as sophomores Shane Waldon and Chase Ramos, and freshman Paul Schmelzer III each tallied 14 points. Waldon, a Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native was 6-of-10 from the floor, grabbed five rebounds, and registered the team's lone blocked shot. Schmelzer, a Monona Grove (WI) HS graduate, was nearly perfect from the field converting 5-of-6 shots with four being from outside the three-point arc. Ramos, a native of DeForest, Wisconsin, also canned four 3-pointers as part of a 5-for-7 shooting effort off the bench. For both Schmelzer and Ramos, the 14 points were season highs.

Twelve players in all scored for the WolfPack as they put up their second highest point total of the season after scoring 94 in their previous outing.

Freshman guard Marquis Harris led the glasswork with seven rebounds, one of 13 players to secure a board in the game.

Madison College is now 3-4 all-time against Anoka-Ramsey, who has won two straight and four of the last five meetings since 2012.

Game #2: St. Cloud Technical & Community College 79, Madison College 75

Trailing by 17 at the half, Madison College turned the tides against the Cyclones in the second half and did so in a flash. The WolfPack opened the second half with a 20-2 run to assume a one-point lead at 49-48 with 13:34 to play. The game remained tight and coach Bill Kegler's team owned a 71-70 advantage with a little over 90 seconds remaining when St. Cloud (2-0) finished with a 9-4 run, hitting 7-of-8 free throws to put it away.

The WolfPack committed 25 turnovers in the game - the second most of the season behind 26 against Highland - and the Cyclones turned them into 26 points. When they didn't turn the ball over, the 'Pack shot 47% overall, yet were out performed beyond the three-point arc and at the free throw line.

Freshman Tyree Young dropped in a season-high 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting and a making all five of his free throws. The Nicolet (WI) HS product also had five assists and five rebounds, both season-high totals.

Shane Waldon was the only other player in double figures with 15 points. He has scored in double figures in four straight games, averaging a team-best 14.0 points. Paul Schmelzer III and Deshawn Black each had nine points. Joel O'Donnell finished with seven points and a team-leading ten rebounds, his second double-digit rebounding effort of the season.

The meeting marked the first ever game between Madison College and St. Cloud Technical & Community College.

The WolfPack returns the Redsten Gymnasium where they will be five of their next six games starting Tuesday, November 15 against NJCAA Division I Sauk Valley Community College (2-3). The Skyhawks have owned the head-to-head series, taking 23 of the 28 previous matchups. SVCC won last year 90-87 in double overtime, while Madison College was a seven-point winner in 2014. Tip off is at 7:30 p.m. and can be seen live on MadisonCollege.TV.
