Top-seeded WolfPack men falter in Region IV Final

3-1 loss to #10 Harper ends season for #9 Madison College

MADISON, WISC. - The feelings were good Saturday at Warner Park as the top-seeded Madison College men's soccer team led early against second-seeded Harper College, but it would not hold up as the WolfPack fell 3-1 in the NJCAA Region IV Division III Championship Game. Madison College was in search of their first Region IV title and playing in their first region final since winning the Region XIII crown in 2008. The Hawks advance to the District C Championship Tournament, which they will host next weekend.

Barely ten minutes into the match #9 Madison College was able to secure the first goal as Jake Andrews set up sophomore Ryan Henry for the scoring strike. It was the ninth goal of the season for the former Madison Memorial (WI) Spartan, who tallied eight of those goals over the season's final eight contests.

The one goal advantage remained in tact until Harper College (15-2-1) freshman Ricky Choi turned the game into his personal showcase. The midfielder evened the score with a goal in the 38th minute, tallied the game-winner in the 62nd, and added a third for good measure in extra time to propel visitors to the Region IV title. The hat trick is the first allowed to an opposing player by the WolfPack this season.

Madison College (14-2-2) was out shot 12-10 in the game, including an 8-6 disadvantage in shots on goal. Keeper Juan Martinez finished with five saves, as did the opposing netminder.

The WolfPack went 1-1-1 against Harper in 2016 after being swept the previous year, and now trail the all-time series 11-6-1.

The loss concludes the second best season in program history, trailing only the 15-1-1 season of 2007. The 14 wins doubled the previous best under head coach Cory Sims.
