MADISON, WISC. - History was on the side of the Madison College men's soccer team Saturday as they opened NJCAA Region IV Division III Tournament play with a 4-1 win over in-state rival Milwaukee Area Technical College at Warner Park. The win is the third of the year against the Stormers, and ninth straight victory for the WolfPack in the head-to-head series.
Twin brothers
Toby Andrews and
Jake Andrews powered Madison College (12-1-2, 8-1-1) with two goals a piece. Toby opened the scoring by taking a
Carlos Martinez pass and dumping it in the back of the net in the game's fifth minute. Thirty minutes later, Jake made it 2-0 with a goal off a
James Pretto pass, a score that would hold through halftime.
In the second half, Milwaukee (1-13-0, 0-10-0) tallied it's first goal against
Juan Martinez to cut the deficit in half in the 66th minute. The goal marked the first allowed by the WolfPack against the Stormers this season after outscoring them 15-0 in two matches. It was also the first goal allowed by a Madison College goaltender in three games.
The narrow lead lasted just seven minutes before
Jake Andrews registered another goal, this time on an assist from
Bachirou Lo, to recapture a two goal advantage. The WolfPack quickly put the game out of reach in the 75th minute when
Carlos Martinez set up
Toby Andrews for the second time in the game.
Natives of London, England, and transfers from the Madison College men's basketball program, the Andrews' twins has scored a combined 28 goals (Toby 15, Jake 13) this season, and are first and second on the team in goals scored and points.
Jake Andrews is also tied for the team lead in assists with 13.
Sophomore goaltender
Juan Martinez returned from a two-game absence for a lower leg injury to make two saves and pick up his tenth win of the season. Martinez faced just six total shots from the Stormers, while the WolfPack attempted 18 shots.
Madison College, the top seed in the NJCAA Region IV Division III Tournament, will continue postseason play on Wednesday with a semifinal match against fourth-seeded Rock Valley College (9-6-1, 3-6-1). The WolfPack downed the Golden Eagles in two regular season matches by a combined score of 10-2. They are 4-2-1 all-time against RVC.
