Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Second half lead, winning streak lost in final seconds

The longest win streak of the season for the Madison College men's basketball team came to a crashing halt as a 15-point lead evaporated into a late 69-67 loss Saturday against the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. The WolfPack entered the weekend with three consecutive wins, but the loss drops the team to 6-9 overall and 1-1 in North Central Community College Conference (N4C) play.

Second-year guard Kristian Zimmerman completed an and-1 to give Madison College its largest lead of the game at 64-49 with 6:28 remaining in the game. The Chaparrals outscored the 'Pack 16-0 over the next five minutes to assume a one-point lead with 90 seconds remaining. Zimmerman again stepped to the free throw line down two with 30 seconds to play, and calmly knocked down a pair to even the game at 67. DuPage answered with a jumper and Madison College called timeout to set up its final play with just five ticks of the clock remaining. Once more the ball ended up in Zimmerman's hands, however his shot to tie the game went unanswered as the final horn sounded.

The WolfPack and Chaparrals traded blows early, before Ethan Lurquin drilled a three-pointer to spark Madison College on a 13-3 blitz to close the half with a 38-30 advantage. The game featured 10 lead changes and eight ties as the 'Pack fell to 2-4 away from Redsten Gym. The two teams were pretty even in the shooting department, though Madison College hit 7-of-16 (43.8%) tries from beyond the arc compared to a 2-for-9 effort from DuPage. The Chaparrals also held narrow advantages in rebounds, second chance points, points in the paint, and bench points. The WolfPack were one point better in cashing in on turnovers and assisted on 16 of 23 field goals made.

Making his second consecutive start, Lurquin continued to be a welcomed spark as he led the WolfPack in scoring for a second straight game with 19 points. The Poynette native is averaging 19 points a game through four contest since joining the team at the semester break. He was 4-of-6 from deep and collected five rebounds. Zimmerman registered just four made baskets, but did convert 10-of-11 at the free throw line. His 83.3% mark at the stripe leads the team for those with at least ten attempts on the season, and his 88 total attempts is nearly 40 better than the next highest total on the team. His seven assists against DuPage was a team-high and pushes his per game average to 5.2. Also in double figures was Tyler Meier, who connected on three long range bombs en route to 13 points. The Monticello, Wisconsin product has scored ten or more points in five of the last six games, while also grabbing a team-best eight rebounds.

The road trip continues for Madison College with a non-conference matchup Monday, January 11 at UW-Marathon County in Wausau. The WolfPack have won five of the last six meetings and owns an 18-4 all-time lead in the head-to-head series with the Huskies. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
