Madison College Baseball dominates in NJCAA Region IV Tournament opener

The WolfPack continued to do what they are best at, and that's win baseball games. The #1 seeded WolfPack came from behind to defeat the #11 seeded Morton College Panthers 10-2 in seven innings in their NJCAA Region IV Tournament opener on May 15.

Madison suffered a scare after being down one run after two innings, but the home team at the post-season tournament in Schaumburg, IL wouldn't go away quietly. The WolfPack scored three and six runs in the sixth and seventh innings, and starter Marcellus Sneed shutdown the Panthers down the stretch for the 10-2 post-season win. The come from behind win bettered the WolfPack's record to 40-10, and gave them a four game post-season winning streak and 21 straight wins overall.

Sam Hurt led the way at the plate with a 3-for-4 day, including one RBI, one run scored, and one stolen base. Tony Butler and Brandon Gibis were next in line with two hits each, and five others added singles as the WolfPack belted out 12 hits (11 singles) compared to Morton's seven hits. Gibis finished his day at the plate 2-for-2, including the 'Pack's lone extra basehit. His sixth inning triple accounted for two of his team leading three RBI, and he also scored twice and walked three times.

Madison's starting pitcher, Marcellus Sneed, settled down after allowing Morton to score two second inning runs. In six and a third innings, Sneed scattered seven hits and two runs while striking out 10 Morton Panthers. His 6.1 innings pitched and 10 strikeouts were both season highs for the Chicago native. Reliever Clayton Uselman closed the game for the WolfPack and threw two thirds of an inning to secure the win.

With the 10-2 win over Morton, the 40-10 WolfPack remain in the winner's bracket and take on the Oakton Community College Raiders tomorrow, Saturday, May 16. The second round NJCAA Region IV Tournament game starts at 12:30 p.m.
