WolfPack Softball splits home doubleheader with Sauk Valley

The Madison College softball team played host to Sauk Valley Friday night, and things started off great in the non-conference doubleheader. Madison won 4-0 in the twinbill opener, before suffering an 18-8 loss.

The WolfPack didn't waste any time in the opener, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after three innings. The game remained that way as WolfPack starter Jenalee Wilson held Sauk Valley to just two hits, while striking out two.

The Madison offense belted out 12 hits in the 4-0 win, but they were all singles. Kayla Crump had three of them as she went 3-for-4, and three players recorded two hits. Breanna Guenther, Nicole Hoffmann, and Paige Giese all had two hits and one run scored. Kiana Smith and Ashley Marshall proved the RBI, and Kayla Crump and Cheyenne Holmes both had steals.

Jenalee Wilson improved to 6-2 in the seven inning win.

Things couldn't start off much worse for Madison as they were down 5-0 before scoring a solo run in the bottom of the second. Sauk Valley scored in every inning after that, putting up 13 runs in the final five frames. Madison did display signs of hope with three and two runs in the fourth and fifth innings respectively, but they couldn't complete the comeback. Besides scoring 18 runs to the WolfPack's eight, Sauk Valley belted out 17 hits and they were aided by four WolfPack errors.

Paige Giese was the only WolfPack player to record two hits in her 2-for-3 day. Giese also had two RBI and scored one run. Besides the seven singles, Billie Nolan and Austann Abbott had the two offensive highlights for Madison. Nolan came off of the bench and stroked a pinch-hit homerun to left field in the seventh inning. Abott hit a three-run homerun out to left field in the fourth inning. The homeruns were the first four-baggers for Nolan and Abbott.

The three Madison pitchers that saw game action were all roughed up in some way, as they all allowed earned runs. Ashley Stormer got the start and went 3.1 innings. She gave up eight hits, walked two, and allowed eight runs (6 earned). Courtney Boss relieved her, but didn't fare much better. Boss surrned six runs (2 earned) in 2.2 innings of relief. Hailee Jacobson finished the game and allowed four runs (1 earned) in one inning on the mound.

The WolfPack's next game is tomorrow as the travel to Sugar Grove, IL to take on the Waaubonsee Community College Chiefs at 12:00 p.m. Madison defeated Waubonsee 6-5 in an early season game.
