The Madison College softball team made the most of their first National Junior College Athletic Association Division II post-season experience by beating Kishwaukee College in three games to advance to the NJCAA Region IV Tournament hosted in Freeport, IL. The WolfPack, having just joined NJCAA Division II this season, overcame a game one loss, in their best of three game Region IV Quarterfinal series with Kishwaukee College, on Tuesday night, by winning the last two games 6-5 and 12-11.
In game one, both teams were tied 1-1 heading to the bottom of the fourth inning. In the fourth, Kishwaukee College scored two runs and never looked back. The Cougars added two additional runs in the sixth inning while holding the WolfPack offense to just one hit over the final three innings. The WolfPack committed three errors and
Courtney Boss received the loss as she gave up two earned runs over six innings of work. Third baseman
Kayla Crump led the 'Pack offensively by going 2-for-4 while teammate
Nicole Hoffmann had the team's only RBI on a fourth inning solo home run. Madison College fell 5-1.
In game two, the WolfPack came out hitting, scoring two runs in the opening inning. The Cougars answered in the bottom of the first with a run of their own. Madison College then answered with a run in the third inning and two runs in the fourth while the Cougars scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to tie the score at 5-5. With the score tied heading to the seventh,
Breanna Guenther led off with a solo blast to right field and then
Jenalee Wilson pitched a scoreless bottom half of the inning to give the WolfPack a 6-5 victory and tie the series at 1-1.
Jenalee Wilson received the win by pitching seven innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits, with four base on balls and five strikeouts.
Ashley Marshall,
Breanna Guenther, and
Paige Giese each had two hits while
Kayla Crump and
Ashley Marshall had two RBIs to lead the WolfPack's scoring attack. Guenther had a seventh inning home run while Crump added a triple. The WolfPack outhit the host Cougars 10 to 7.
In the deciding game of the series, both teams traded the lead over the first seven innings and matched each others scoring in the fifth and sixth innings scoring two runs each in the fifth and four runs each in the sixth. The game went to extra innings and both teams scored two runs in the eighth before Paige Geise ended it in the tenth with a walk off single to right, scoring Breanne Guenther. Both teams combined for 23 runs, 28 hits and 12 errors in the exciting back and forth third and deciding game. The WolfPack advanced with a 12-11 win.
Courtney Boss earned the victory by pitching four and one third innings, striking out three and not allowing an earned run or walk.
Jenalee Wilson and
Casey Beckwith both saw action from the mound as well. Offensively, five players had multiple hits including
Kayla Crump,
Cheyenne Holmes, Breanna Buenther,
Ashley Marshall and
Paige Giese.
Cheyenne Holmes was the WolfPack's leading batter, going 4-for-6 with five RBIs.
Ashley Marshall posted multiple RBIs (2) as well on 2-for-4 batting. Four WolfPack batters had home runs including two for
Cheyenne Holmes and one for both
Nicole Hoffmann and
Brianna Smith.
The quarterfinal win advances the WolfPack to the NJCAA Region IV Tournament hosted by Highland Community College at the Read Park Diamonds in Freeport, IL. Madison College will play Illinois Valley Community College on Friday, May 1 at 1:00 p.m. on the Southwest Diamond.
