Madison Baseball starts conference season with two wins over Harper

The WolfPack baseball team started off North Central Community College Conference (N4C) play in style with 7-4 and 13-0 win over the Harper College Hawks in Palatine, IL. The two wins were about as different as they come, since Madison came back for the win in the opener, before crushing the Hawks in game two.
 
The 'Pack completed the comeback in game one of a doubleheader, as they were down 6-2 after five innings, but erupted for five runs in the last two frames for the 7-4 win. Madison outhit Harper 11-to-8, and used two Harper errors to their advantage to start off conference play in style.
 
The trio of Courtney Watkins, Luke Yapp, and Matt College (all second year players) each recorded two hits in the game. Yapp and Cole provided doubles, the only extra base hits of the game, and Yapp also led the team with two RBI. The seven runs were spread out evenly as seven different players crossed the plate. Nick Kanavas also recorded a hit, picked up the lone WolfPack steal, and scored a run in his pinch hit performance. Starter Derek Heffel was allowed one run in the second inning and three in the fifth, but settled down and earned the win to improve to 2-0 on the year. He also struck out seven, before being relieved by sophomore Ryne Blanton. Blanton pitched a perfect seventh inning on his way to picking up save number one of the year.
 
Madison made game two a no doubter, as the jumped out with five runs in the top of the first inning. Nick Kanavas doubled to center for two RBI to start of the scoring, Mike Jordahl singled in another run, and Matt Cole stroked a two-run homerun for the quick 5-0 lead. After taking a break in the second inning, the WolfPack again exploded for six runs in the third for the 11-0 lead. Matt Cole doubled in two runs to start the inning, Liam Kellogg drove in two more with a single, and Brandon Gibis added the last two runs of the frame with a two-run homerun to centerfield. Mike Jordahl continued the run of dingers and wrapped up the scoring with a two-run homerun to right field to make it 13-0.
 
Madison belted out 13 hits (5 extra base hits), and drove in all 13 of the runs scored. Mike Jordahl was the leading hitter going 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored, and Matt Cole led the team with four RBI in his 2-for-2 day. Nick Kanavas also scored three runs, and three other members of the 'Pack recorded two hits. Brandon Gibis recorded the lone stolen base for Madison. Starter Brandon Parr when the distant in the five run game. He only allowed five hits and struck out two as he improved to 1-1 on the season.
 
Madison takes to the diamond tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Freeport, IL to face Highland Community College (IL). The first game of the doubleheader starts at 2:00 p.m.
