Madison College Softball wins two over Iowa colleges

Madison College won two games over Iowa junior colleges on Sunday to improve to 4-1 on the spring trip. The 'Pack held on to beat Southwestern Community College, 7-6, in the their first game of the day and followed up that win with a 10-7 victory over Iowa Lakes Community College in the night cap.

In game one, against Southwestern Community College from Creston, IA the WolfPack led 7-1 after two innings. The 'Pack scored six runs on three hits and four errors in the second inning. Cheyenne Holmes and Breanna Guenther contributed with back-to-back home runs in that inning. The six-run cushion proved to be just enough as Southwestern rebounded scoring three runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to close to within one run. Second year pitcher, Casey Beckwith came in to close the game out and preserve the victory.

Casey Beckwith received the save by giving up just one hit in an inning and two-thirds. Starter Courtney Boss received the win, surrendering three earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Offensively, Breanna Guenther was the only WolfPack player with multiple hits as she was 2-for-3 with two RBI, a double and a homerun. Cheyenne Holmes also received two RBI as well on her second inning homerun.

In game two, Madison College faced another Iowa junior college in Iowa Lakes Community College. Again, the WolfPack built up a lead and held on. After four innings the 'Pack led 8-3 but in the top of the sixth closed to within one run. With the game 8-7 in the bottom of the sixth, Madison College was able to manufacture two runs. Ashley Stormer kept Iowa Lakes at bay in the seventh and the 'Pack won 10-7.

Ashley Stormer pitched a complete game, striking out one, walking three and giving up six earned runs on 15 hits. Madison College was out hit for the second straight game but received the win.

Ashley Marshall went 3-for-3 with an RBI and four scored runs while teammates, Cheyenne Holmes, Kiana Smith and Brianna Smith all went 2-for-3. Both Smith's accounted for two RBI each.

The WolfPack improved to 9-2 overall and 4-1 on the spring trip. Madison College will play Chesapeake College and Crowder College tomorrow in Cocoa Beach, FL.
