Madison College softball beats Luther, Falls to St. Thomas

In their second day of action in Florida, Madison College softball split a pair of games at Hancock Park in Clermont, FL. In the first game, the WolfPack beat Luther College JV (IA), 8-4 and in the night cap lost to University of St. Thomas JV, 10-0.

In their first game of the day, Madison College and Luther College traded leads over the first three innings until the WolfPack exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third inning to break the game open. Luther added two runs in the fifth but never got any closer as the 'Pack added another run in the bottom of the sixth to win 8-4.

The WolfPack had three players with multiple hits and three with multiple RBIs. Cheyenne Holmes, Breanna Guenther and Austann Abbott all had two hits while Kayla Crump, Cheyenne Holmes and Kiana Smith each posted two RBIs. Former Middleton H.S. athlete, Ashley Stormer, received the win pitching five innings, scattering eight hits and giving up three earned runs. Stormer struck out two and walked two. Portage's, Jenalee Wilson, earned the save by pitching two innings, striking out two and not allowing a run.

In the second game of the night, the WolfPack ran into a talented University of St. Thomas team. The 'Pack managed just two hits and St. Thomas scored two runs in the second, five runs in the third and three in the fifth on 12 hits to run-rule Madison College, 10-0. Kayla Crump and Jessie Steindorf managed the only WolfPack hits while Casey Beckwith received the loss. Beckwith gave up six earned runs on eight hits in two and a third innings of work. Courtney Boss entered in relief and gave up an additional three earned runs on four hits in her two and two-thirds innings.

The WolfPack are now 7-2 overall and 2-1 on their Florida spring trip. Today, Madison College softball plays Monroe Community College at 3 p.m. and Iowa Lake Community College at 7 p.m. at Hancock Park in Clermont, FL
