Box Score 2 The Madison College women's basketball team escaped the cold of Wisconsin, heading west to Arizona for a two-game winter trip Dec. 29 & 30, and the WolfPack showed they can heat up in a hurry. Madison beat NJCAA Division II opponent Scottsdale Community College 69-54, before falling to Division I South Plains College 76-66.
Against Scottsdale Community College, the WolfPack looked sharp on both ends of the floor. Defensively, the team finished with 20 steals, while holding the Fighting Artichokes to 36 percent shooting from the field. Offensively, Madison College shot 54 percent from the floor in the second half, finishing the game with a 46 percent clip.
Taking a six point lead into halftime, the 'Pack pulled away in the second half, outscoring 41-32 after the break.
Meagan Mazur led Madison College with 20 points and nine steals.
Gabrielle Hood added 14 points and seven assists.
While the WolfPack missed all 13 of their three-point attempts, they were sensational down low. Madison College finished with 50 points in the paint, 20 more than Scottsdale Community College.
Game two, taking on the Texans of South Plains College, the WolfPack would have a much tougher time defensively. South Plains managed to shoot 50 percent from the field for the game, hitting 27 of 54 shots.
Both teams committed 21 turnovers in the game, however the Texans turned in 35 points off those by the 'Pack, while Madison College managed to score just 10 off the South Plains mistakes.
Trailing by nine at the break, the WolfPack started to dial in from long distance. The team hit five of their 11 three-point attempts. However, the Texans would still outscore Madison College over the final 20 minutes, 41-40.
The end result, a 10-point loss, may have been different had the WolfPack shot better from the free throw line. Madison made just 10 of their 21 free-throw attempts, a 47 percent mark.
Three players scored in double figures for the WolfPack against South Plains College.
Gabrielle Hood led the way with 16 points.
Kelly Calhoun and
Meagan Mazur added 15 points and 12 points, respectively.
The WolfPack, 7-4 overall, will return home for a Saturday, Jan. 4 matchup against Kishwaukee College at 1 p.m. Madison College is undefeated at H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium so far this season, beating all three opponents they've faced on their home floor.
