The WolfPack upset the #2 tournament seed Harper College Hawks with a big second half effort. The victory puts Madison College in Saturday's NJCAA Region IV Championship game with a national tournament berth on the line.
It was a tale of two halves for the WolfPack. In the first half, the WolfPack were outrebounded and shot just 32% from the field. By giving up too many second chance points the team found itself trailing by five points going into halftime.
The second half was a different story as Madison College shot well, going 21-for-37 from the field (56.8%). The WolfPack outrebounded the Hawks and took care of the basketball, committing just nine turnovers for the game. Madison College outscored Harper 52-33 in the second half and won 77-63.
Four WolfPack players reached double-figures including
Aaron Jones who led the way with 18 points on 7-for-15 shooting from the field. Fellow starter,
Jordan Van Cleave fell one rebound short of a double-double with nine rebounds and 10 points.
Madison College received major contributions off the bench as guard
Mike Wynn scored 13 points and dished out four assists. Second year post player,
Corey Yahnke added 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting.
With the win, the WolfPack improve to 16-14 and more importantly advance to the NJCAA Region IV Championship game on Saturday, February 26 versus the #3 nationally ranked Joliet Junior College Wolves. The winner of the region championship advances to the NJCAA Division III National Championship in
Loch Sheldrake, NY. The Madison College men's basketball team has been to the national championship one time prior, in 1986.
