WolfPack Split Two Games in Minnesota

It was a familiar scene to open the 2010-11 men's basketball season for Madison College, but there were plenty of new faces on the court that put in big performances for the WolfPack. Two players recorded double-doubles and another came up just short of a triple-double in two games at the Sanford Worthington Classic in Worthington, Minn. on Nov. 5-6.

After losing the first game to the tournament host Minnesota West Community & Technical College 83-77, the WolfPack came back strong the next day with a 20-point win over Riverland College 96-76.

Corey Yahnke led the team in scoring both games with a combined 47 points in his first two appearances for the WolfPack. He recorded a double-double in the first game by grabbing 12 rebounds in addition to scoring 23 points. The 6-foot-6, 250 pound center gives the WolfPack some added size in the middle that the team didn't have last season.

In the second game of the tournament the WolfPack got a double-double from Tyler Kowalkowski, who scored 11 points and rebounded 11 balls in the win over Riverland. The WolfPack also got a big performance from another first-year player, Jordan Van Cleave who scored 15 points, pulled down eight rebounds, dished out eight assists and had two steals.

In their season-opening game the WolfPack were plagued by a slow start, getting outscored 43-27 in the first half of the game. They didn't give up despite a 16-point halftime deficict and outscored the Bluejays by 10 in the second half in the six-point loss.

After the first half of the first game of the tournament, the WolfPack offense really heated up, scoring 50, 49 and 47 points in the final three halves in Worthington.

The WolfPack will try to score many than 47 points in a fourth-straight half when they return to action in Madison on Nov. 12-13 when they host the Madison College Border Battle Classic.
