Trip to Carl Sandburg College results in split DH for WolfPack

Patterson throws two-hitter as Madison College wins nightcap in run-rule fashion

GALESBURG, ILL. - A Friday road trip to Carl Sandburg College resulted in a split Region 4 doubleheader for the Madison College softball team as they recovered from a 6-2 loss in the opener to win the finale 8-0 in six innings. The loss snapped an 11-game win streak over the Chargers, however, the WolfPack still boasts a 15-4 lead in the all-time series.

Game #1: Carl Sandburg College 6, Madison College 2

The host Chargers capitalized on a pair of runners aboard in the first inning with their third single of the frame off starter Ella Wyskochil to take a 1-0 lead. Madison answered in the third as sophomore Briar Armatoski sent a double to left to drive in Sammy Nelson to tie the game.

The tie didn't last long as CSC loaded the bases in the bottom half with no outs, and scored three runs on back-to-back hits and a walk. The WolfPack bats were silenced over the next couple innings before finally creating another run in the sixth. Nelson drew a leadoff walk, and after pinch runner Chariell Butler moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt from Armatoski, sophomore Ellie Rademacher delivered with a run-scoring double to left.

Two more runs on four consecutive hits in the home half padded the Chargers advantage to 6-2, and the Pack went 1-2-3 in the seventh to end it.

Rademacher, a Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native, was the lone player with multiple hits for the visitors, going 2 for 3 with two doubles and a run batted in. Armatoski had a hit - also a double - and a RBI. Sophie Rivera produced the only other hit as the Pack totaled just four base knocks to tie for their second lowest output this season.

Wyskochil (1-4) worked two innings and was tagged with two earned runs and one unearned on five hits and a walk. She struck out one batter before Claire Smedema took over for the final four innings. The second year arm fanned three batters, and allowed three runs on even hits and two walks.

Game #2: Madison College 8, Carl Sandburg College  0 (6 innings)

A scoreless game through three innings in the finale quickly changed course with a pair of big frames for Madison College (20-18). The WolfPack had a hit in each of the first three innings, but was not able to score until the fourth when freshman Jenna Redders drew a leadoff walk, advanced to third on a sac bunt, and and scored on a wild pitch.

A four-run fifth inning put the Pack squarely in control, and it came from a barrage of hits and errors. Doubles by Ellie Rademacher and Karis Paulson made it 2-0, and an error by Carl Sandburg College (10-30) allowed Paulson to touch home. A second error in the inning followed a Chariell Butler hit and two runs scored on the miscue to make it 5-0. Hailey Richter drove in Makenna Gish to ignite a three-run inning to put the WolfPack in position for a run-ruled decision. A seven-run advantage came on an error, and Redders finished the inning with a RBI-single to left to push Paulson across.

Meanwhile, Kiana Patterson (9-3) dominated opposing hitters, limiting the Chargers lineup to just two hits over six innings. The former Sun Prairie HS athlete struck out five batters en route to her second shutout and ninth complete game.
