Softball sweeps Illinois Valley to reach three-game win streak

Patterson delivers in the batter's box and pitcher's circle in opener

OGLESBY, ILL. - Two wins Wednesday at Illinois Valley Community College gave the Madison College softball team their fourth sweep of a Region 4 doubleheader this season, and created a winning streak that stands at three games. The WolfPack followed sophomore Kiana Patterson in a 5-3 win in the opener, and held off the Eagles in a 4-1 win to close it out. The wins give the Pack a 12-game win streak in head-to-head meetings, and a 15-5 edge in the all-time series.

Game #1: Madison College 5, Illinois Valley Community College 3

Madison College got right to work with a two-out rally in the first half inning. Sammy Nelson opened with a single, and two strikeouts later, back-to-back run-scoring hits from Kiana Patterson and Madison Coubal had staked the Pack to a 2-0 lead. A solo home run in the second off Patterson cut the advantage in half, and another to begin the third inning tied the game at 2-2.

Patterson settled in after that, retiring ten of the next 11 batters. In the meantime, the WolfPack added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth. Nelson singled in Jenna Redders to put the visitors on top, and then Redders turned around and drove a single to left to plate Coubal and Patterson for a 5-2 differential.

Three straight singles in the bottom of the sixth loaded the bases for the Eagles, but the Pack limited the damage to just a run. Patterson closed out the win in a five-batter seventh inning to improve to 8-3 on the year. The former Sun Prairie HS athlete allowed two earned runs, eight hits, and a walk. Patterson fanned three in her seventh complete game effort.

Patterson's work extended to the plate, as well, where she was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and one batted in. It's her second three-hit game of the season.

Nelson also produced three hits, giving the second year outfielder five games with three or more this spring. She tallied a run and a RBI, as did Coubal with her two hits. Redders finished with two hits, a team-high two runs driven in, and a run scored.

Game #2: Madison College 4, Illinois Valley Community College 1

Much like Game 1, the nightcap began with a pair of two-out hits in the first inning and put a run on the scoreboard. Madison Coubal singled to left and drove in Hannah Aldrich to give Madison the early lead. Coubal delivered again with a clutch two-out single through the left side that was good enough to bring Sophie Rivera and Sammy Nelson in for a 3-0 differential.

The score remained that way until both teams were able to score one run in the sixth inning. An error on Kaylin Bergum's grounder scored Coubal before Illinois Valley (14-14) took advantage of consecutive walks issued by Aldrich, and a single to center off reliever Ella Wyskochil. The freshman from New Berlin, Wisconsin, did allow two hits and the tying run to come to the plate in the seventh before getting a line out to Jenna Redders at shortstop to close out her first career save.

Aldrich (4-4) picked up the win with five innings of work and four strikeouts. She allowed a run on four hit and four walks. Wyskochil was tagged for three hits over two innings.

Coubal, a native of Muskego, Wisconsin, set career-highs with three hits and three runs batted, while also scoring a run. Mackenna Schultz and Briar Armatoski each had two hits, with Rivera, Nelson, and Aldrich each scoring a run.
