Verhelst took over the department on an interim basis in July 2022 after long-time Athletic Director Steve Hauser retired. During his first few months at the helm, Verhelst hired head women's volleyball and performance coach Mallory (Dixon) Stone, head men's basketball coach Jason Roscoe, head men's soccer coach Logan Fye, and announced the start of a scholarship campaign as the department prepares to move six teams up to NJCAA Division II competition starting in the Fall of 2023.

"Having been with the department for over 22 years, I know the storied history and am excited and humbled to be able to help write the next chapter. Keep an eye on the WolfPack in the years to come!"

Hired in October 2000 as the Sports Information Director, Verhelst was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director of Communications in 2014 and Associate Athletic Director in 2018. He is the fourth Director of Athletics in the department's 58-year history.

In addition to those duties, he also assisted with eligibility and other special projects.

Verhelst is the founder and acting director of SportReporting.com, a business entity of the college and the athletic department.
