DEFOREST, WISC. - Despite shifting their final home game off-campus, the Madison College softball team handled its business Friday with a sweep of a Region 4 doubleheader against Illinois Valley Community College at the
DeForest Athletic Complex. The WolfPack fought hard for a 3-0 decision in the opener, and ran away with a 10-3 decision in the nightcap that gives the Pack a ten-game win streak over the Eagles. They now own a 13-5 lead in the all-time series.
Game #1: Madison College 3, Illinois Valley Community College 0
In her first start since breaking the program's all-time strikeout record,
Casey Fountain (11-3) kept right on going with seven K's over seven innings of shutout softball. IVCC was only able to get four hits off the Poynette, Wisconsin, product.
A scoreless game entering the bottom of the third became a 2-0 Madison College lead as Fountain helped her own cause with a two-run single to center.
Briar Armatoski and
Brianna Brandner, who had doubled and singled, respectively, were both able to score on the two-out hit.
Sophie Rivera opened the fourth inning with a double to center, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Trista Ripp.
Sammy Nelson then grounded out to second, allowing Rivera to touch home ang put the Pack up 3-0.
Fountain finished 2 for 3 with two RBI, while Brandner, Rivera, and Armatoski each had a hit and a run scored.
Game #2: Madison College 10, Illinois Valley Community College 3
Illinois Valley Community College (8-12) came out swining in the first inning of game two, following up two singles with a two-out, three-run home run off starter
Mallory Sterling (5-4). The Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, native would settle down from there, allowing just five more hits over the next six innings. She finished with three earned runs over seven innings, with eight total hits and two walks. Sterling also recorded 11 strikeouts to match a season-high, and register her third double-digit strikeout performance of her career.
The Madison College (26-14) bats came to life in the second as
Trista Ripp doubled in
Bri Unger to make it 3-1.
Grace Madeiros followed with a single to center, and Ripp raced in from second to make it a one-run game.
Still trailing in the fifth, the Pack produced five runs on seven hits to take a 7-3 advantage. Three consecutive singles to open the inning loaded the bases for Sterling, who helped her own cause with bases-clearing double into left field. She then scored when
Brianna Brandner's grounder got through the right side, and Brandner touched home on the next at bat with
Chariell Butler driving in the run with a ground out.
To cap the scoring, and put the game out of reach for the Eagles, Madison College put up a three-spot in the sixth inning to create a seven-run differential.
Mia Noelker came through with a two-run single, and Unger's base knock brought Noelker home.
Madison College stacked up a dozen hits, with Brandner, Unger, and Ripp all producing two hits each. The trio also finished with identical stat lines of two runs scored and one batted in. Sterling was tops with three RBI and a run scored, and Noelker had two ribbies and a run scored.
