JOLIET, ILL. -
Casey Fountain made her presence felt in a big way Tuesday with a dominating performance to lead the Madison College softball team to a 10-1 victory in five innings over Joliet Junior College. The NFCA All-American bashed a home run and struck out six batters to propel the WolfPack to a North Central Community College Conference win. The victory gives the 'Pack a sweep of the regular season series with the Wolves after a 9-1 decision in six innings at the N4C Dome Jamboree. The all-time series now stands at 36-15 in favor of Madison College.
Fountain and the WolfPack struck early as the Poynette, Wisconsin, native drilled a 2-2 pitch over the center field fence for a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. The Wolves (8-14, 1-4) answered with a run of their own in the home half of the first after consecutive hits against Fountain. She was able to increase the advantage to 3-1 in the third with a run-scoring single up the middle to ignite a four-run frame that included RBI hits from
Trista Ripp and
Mia Noelker. Following a wild pitch that resulted in a run in the fourth inning, Noelker, a first baseman from Overland Park, Kansas, crushed the second pitch of her at-bat beyond the right field fence for another two-run blast.
Grace Madeiros then doubled to right and
Abbie Cavadini single her home to make it a 10-1 differential in the fifth inning. Fountain struck out one and allowed a single in the bottom half to close out the win.
Fountain went 2 for 3 at the plate with a run scored and three runs batted in. The home run is her first of the season and third of her career. In the pitcher's circle, the right-hander allowed one run on four hits and a walk, and fanned six batters over her five innings to improve to 4-1 this spring.
Noelker matched Fountain's production at the plate with a 2 for 3 effort that yielded a team-best three RBI and a run scored. She now boasts a pair of home run swings this season and three for her career. Ripp, a former Waunakee HS athlete, also had two hits in three at bats, helping the WolfPack generate 11 hits for the game. She was the only player to cross home twice, and also drove in a run.
Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled after three innings.
