MADISON, WISC. - After reaching a season-high seven consecutive wins, the Madison College softball team saw their streak come to a close as they split their final doubleheader in North Central Community College Conference play on Tuesday against Joliet Junior College. The WolfPack, who dropped a spot to #12 in the
NJCAA Division II Poll, earned a dramatic 3-2 win at
Robert D. Goodman Softball Field to begin the day, but dropped a 7-3 contest in the nightcap. The setback also snapped a 23-game win streak in the head-to-head series, which the 'Pack still leads by a 32-14 count.
Game #1: #12 Madison College 3, Joliet Junior College 2 (7 innings)
With the game tied at two and the WolfPack batting in the bottom of the sixth, freshman
Paige Hintz ripped a line drive to centerfield and raced around to third to put the go-ahead run just 60 feet from home. Two batters later sophomore
Nicole Ferch grounded out on the right side, allowing Hintz to cross home and give the 'Pack a 3-2 lead. First year righthander
Jordan Martin then finished out the win with a four-batter bottom of the seventh.
Scoreless into the third, Madison College got on the board first when 1-2 hitters
Paige Cornelissen and Maegan recorded back-to-back hits. Cornelissen did all the work for the game's second run with an inside-the-park home run on a ball hit to right field. The Wolves pulled even in the sixth with two runs on three hits.
Martin (9-2) earned her third consecutive win with seven strikeouts over seven innings. The Hortonville, Wisconsin, native was on the hook for two earned runs on six hits and no walks.
Cornelissen, a native of Wrightstown, Wisconsin, had three of the WolfPack's seven hits, while four other players each had one hit. The sophomore scored a team-high two runs and drove in one run.
Game #2: Joliet Junior College 7, #12 Madison College 3 (7 innings)
The finale started off on the wrong foot for Madison College when starter
Brianna Farrington gave up base hits to the first four batters she faced, leading to an early 3-0 deficit. Joliet Junior College (28-14, 3-4) made it 4-0 with another run in the third. The WolfPack cut the deficit in half when sophomore
Dany Gumz doubled in a pair of runs with a two-out line drive to center. In the fourth, second year shortstop
Hannah Grahl came through with another two-out base hit that plated
Morgan Dercola, and suddenly the 'Pack was within a run. It would be as close as the home team would get, and in the sixth, the Wolves tacked on three more runs for the insurmountable lead.
Farrington (6-3) finished with four earned runs on seven hits and a strikeout in her three innings in the circle. Fellow first year
Cathryn Hiller worked the final four innings, surrendering one earned run on six hits and a walk.
Grahl, a native of Rosendale, Wisconsin, was the lone player with multiple hits in the WolfPack lineup, going 2 for 3 with a run scored and one batted in. Gumz posted a team-leading two RBI.
