MADISON, WISC. - For the fifth consecutive season, the Madison College softball team has set a new school record for wins, a feat coach
Leo Kalinowski and company accomplished with a Thursday, April 26 sweep of Illinois Valley Community College in a Region IV doubleheader at
Robert D. Goodman Softball Field. The #9-ranked WolfPack survived a 2-1 contest in the opener before pulling away for an 8-0 win in six innings in the closer, moving the current win streak number to 16 consecutive games. The wins improve the 'Pack to 38-7 overall, surpassing the 2017 record of 37-19, and extend their current win streak to 16 consecutive games.
Game #1: #9 Madison College 2, Illinois Valley Community College 1 (7 innings)
It had been four days and four games since Madison College was tested for the full length of a collegiate softball game, but that's exactly what happened in the opener against IVCC. The WolfPack broke a scoreless game in the third when
Claire Brzenk doubled to the wall in center to score
Bre Feiler from second. The lead would not last long, as the Eagles used two singles, a passed ball, and a wild pitch to even the score in the top of the fourth. In the home half of the fifth, freshman
Dany Gumz drew a leadoff walk, and was replaced on the base paths by the speedy
Maegan Brookins. The Poynette, Wisconsin, native stole second and advanced to third on the play to move into scoring position. Sophomore infielder
Ali Braddock then singled through the right side to plate Brookins and give the 'Pack the lead for good.
Freshman
Alli Walker (10-2) closed out the win from there as she tossed seven strong innings of four-hit softball. The righty allowed an unearned run and struck out eight batters to earn her fourth straight W.
Sam Schloegl had two of the WolfPack's six hits, which she picked up from the leadoff spot.
Game #2: #9 Madison College 8, Illinois Valley Community College 0 (6 innings)
After a hit by pitch in the first inning forced in a run, Madison College (38-7) held a narrow 1-0 lead through 3 1/2 innings. The bottom of the fourth saw the 'Pack bust the game open with four runs on four hits and a walk. With the bases loaded and two outs, sophomore
Claire Brzenk tripled to deep left field to had the home team a five-run cushion. Illinois Valley Community College (12-14) was never able to put together a rally, and Madison College closed the game in the sixth with a three run frame that pushed the score into a run-rule decision.
Hannah Grahl and
Ali Braddock each enjoyed run-producing hits in the inning.
Nine different players recorded a hit for the WolfPack, led by three each from
Sam Schloegl, Brzenk, and
Katelin Gilbertson. Brzenk finished with a team-high three RBI, while
Hannah Grahl drove in two runs and scored two more. Schloegl also crossed home twice.
Emily Wiederholt's scoreless innings streak improved to 21 2/3 as she held the Eagles without a run on two hits. The Cuba City, Wisconsin, product racked up four strikeouts as the WolfPack won their fourth straight against IVCC and now own a 7-5 all-time record.
