MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College softball team extended its current win streak to six games on Thursday with a sweep of Joliet Junior College in the first home North Central Community College Conference twin bill of the season at
Robert D. Goodman Softball Field. The
#19 WolfPack used a combined two-hitter from pitchers
Alli Walker and
Emily Wiederholt to earn a 6-0 shutout in the day's opener, then scored two runs in the final inning to earn a 7-6 come-from-behind, walk-off win after blowing a 4-0 lead to the Wolves. The two wins keep the 'Pack atop the
N4C standings with a perfect 8-0 record and extend their win streak over Joliet to an impressive 21 straight, a streak that dates back to 2013.
Game #1: #19 Madison College 6, Joliet Junior College 0 (7 innings)
Freshman
Alli Walker put together her best outing of the season as she combined with sophomore
Emily Wiederholt to limit Joliet Junior College to two hits in the shutout victory. Walker (6-1) picked up her team-leading sixth win by striking out five batters and only walking three to drop her ERA to 1.49.
The Wolves best chance to score came in the first inning with runners at the corners, however, the Madison College defense ran down the trailing runner in an attempted double steal to end the inning. Walker, a native of Portage, Wisconsin, also induced an inning-ending pop out with a runner at third in the visitor half of the third inning before working 1-2-3 through each of the next three frames. Wiederholt worked a four at-bat seventh and allowed one batter to reach on a walk as she closed out the win.
Walker was able to work with a comfortable cushion after the WolfPack put up three runs in the first inning. After back-to-back singles opened the game, sophomore
Katelin Gilbertson roped a line drive single to left the scored both
Sam Schloegl and
Claire Brzenk. Two batters later, Gilbertson was able to come home on a RBI single from freshman Brittany Bredeman. A sacrifice fly in the fifth made it 4-0 and sophomore
Ashley Kniesel continued her hot hitting with a two-run double to plate Brzenk and
Maddie Krafcheck for the final runs of the game in the sixth.
The WolfPack amassed a dozen hits, led by Aurora University transfer
Sam Schloegl with a 3 for 4 effort and one run scored. Gilbertson, Kniesel, and Bredemann each posted two hits and two RBI. The two-hit game marked the fifth consecutive for Kniesel, a product of Waterloo HS.
Game #2: #19 Madison College 7, Joliet Junior College 6 (7 innings)
Madison College seemed to be cruising to another shutout victory before game two of the doubleheader took a dramatic turn. Sophomore
Hannah Wienen got the start in the circle and held the Wolves (8-8/4-4) without a hit through four innings. Bolstered by a 4-0 lead, the righthander found herself in some trouble in the sixth. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with nobody out, and after a double and a single the score was suddenly 4-3. Wienen recorded a strikeout to the next batter before yet another single tied the game up and a triple handed JJC a 6-4 lead. Second year arm
Mackenzie Terrill was brought in to end the threat.
The WolfPack answered in the home half when freshman
Hannah Grahl followed
Maegan Brookins single with line drive triple to the centerfield wall to bring the 'Pack within a run. Grahl would be stranded at third after a fly out and highlight reel diving catch on a line drive to the shortstop.
Madison College turned in a pair of web gem of their own in the seventh when Brookins made a diving grab of a line drive along the right field line to help Terrill work a 1-2-3 inning. Down to the final at-bats, the 'Pack loaded the bases with one out in the seventh. Freshman
Sam Schloegl's grounder through the left side brought in
Ali Braddock for the game-tying run. Coach
Leo Kalinowski turned to his bench and brought freshman
Paige Cornelissen in as a pinch hitter. The Wrightstown, Wisconsin, native sent a fly ball to right field, deep enough for sophomore
Bre Feiler to tag up from third and race home to score the game-winning run.
The WolfPack bats tallied a baker's dozen hits in the nightcap, with Grahl going 3 for 4 with one RBI to lead the attack. Schloegl, Braddock, and Feiler all had two-hit games. Schloegl and freshman catcher
Nicole Ferch tied for team-high honors with two runs batted in, while Braddock and Feiler each scored twice.
In the circle, Wienen was credited with six earned runs on seven hits and one walk in her 5 2/3 innings. The native of Scales Mound, Illinois, struck out ten batters, giving her 50 K's on the season. Terrill improved her record to a perfect 5-0 in her ninth appearance of the season. The former Milton HS athlete was perfect against the four batters she faced.
Madison College is now 30-13 all-time against Joliet Junior College, including a 19-10 mark in conference games and a 12-7 edge in home games.
Up Next:
The cold and windy weather the two teams endured on Thursday has also been forecast for the weekend, putting the rest of the Madison College (22-5/11-1 in Region IV) homestand in jeopardy. Saturday's scheduled doubleheader against Black Hawk College (2-7/2-4 in Region IV) has already been canceled. A makeup date has yet to be announced. The homestand is scheduled to conclude Sunday with a twin bill against Highland Community College (18-7/11-2), which sits a half-game behind the WolfPack in the Region IV Division II District B standings. The two teams have played just seven times - all coming within the last three years - and the 'Pack has won four of them. The teams split a pair of one-run games at last year's Region IV Tournament. Game one is scheduled to start at noon, followed by an expected 2:00 p.m. first pitch for game two at
Robert D. Goodman Softball Field.
