MADISON, WISC. - Facing their second nationally ranked opponent in as many days, the Madison College softball team was swept for a second consecutive day. The WolfPack dropped a twinbill against #1-ranked Rock Valley College (NJCAA Division III) on Saturday, falling 7-2 and 7-0, in a pair of non-conference games at Robert D. Goodman Softball Field.
Game #1: #1 Rock Valley College 7, Madison College 2
The three-time defending national champions from Rock Valley College took control of game one in the second inning with two runs off sophomore starter
Hannah Jensen. The Watertown, Wisconsin, native walked the first two batters of the inning, and both came in to score on back-to-back singles. The Golden Eagles again took advantage of a leadoff walk in the third to make it 3-0, and then 4-0 in the fourth off of two singles.
With the game still within reach, the Madison College offense was unable to generate any sustained success against RVC's Olivia Fluehr. Freshman
Claire Brzenk's single in the second,
Katelin Gilbertson's walk in the third, and
Bre Feiler's double to start the fifth accounted for base runners against Fluehr.
In the top of the seventh, Rock Valley College generated three more runs to gain a 7-0 lead before the WolfPack was able to make some history in the home half. Facing a relief pitcher, Jensen doubled to center to lead off, and then scored the first ever Madison College run on new Robert D. Goodman Softball Field when Brzenk ripped another double to left.
Ashley Kniesel, who drew a walk as the inning's second batter, also came in to score.
Claire Brzenk, a native of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, finished 2-for-2 with a season-high two RBI. The loss falls on
Hannah Jensen (2-6) for a third straight outing. The righty tossed six innings and allowed four runs on four hits and five walks, while striking out two. Freshman
Emily Wiederholt gave up three runs and three hits in her lone inning of work.
Game #2: #1 Rock Valley College 7, Madison College 0
In game two, Madison College fell behind again in the second inning, this time thanks to a solo home run by Rock Valley's Olivia Fluehr off the WolfPack's
Riley Landenberger to start the inning. The Golden Eagles made it 4-0 in the third after an error, two singles, and a double.
Another mighty swing in the fifth added to the WolfPack deficit when Landenberger's pitch was hit over the wall in left for a three-run homer to make it 7-0. The Roscoe, Illinois, native was credited for four earned runs on ten hits and a walk. Landenberger also struck out five batters.
At the dish, Madison College went down in order through the first three innings until
Brenna Seeber led of the fourth with an infield single. The next eight batters were then retired before Seeber ripped a double to left with two outs in the sixth. In the seventh,
Brooke Heck and
Lindsey Bollig hit successive singles, however, the WolfPack were unable to score any runs in taking their 12th straight loss to RVC, who owns a 26-6 edge all-time.
Madison College (13-12) will look to snap a four-game losing skid when they travel to Black Hawk College-Moline (3-9) on Sunday. The WolfPack swept a home doubleheader last year against the Braves in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Game one has a first pitch time of 12:00 p.m., followed by a 2:00 p.m. start for the nightcap in Moline, Illinois.
