MADISON, WISC. - Looking to flex a little muscle in the North Central Community College Conference, the Madison College softball team executed two impressive wins over Harper College at Robert D. Goodman Softball Field on Thursday. The 9-1 and 13-1 wins both came in five innings as the WolfPack extended their win streak over the Hawks to ten straight dating back to 2014.
Game #1: Madison College 9, Harper College 1 (5 innings)
Madison College racked up numerous extra base hits in building a commanding lead early in the opener against Harper College. Sophomore and starting pitcher
Hannah Jensen had the first with a triple to center that scored
Brenna Seeber for the game's first run in the bottom of the first. After two walks loaded the bases, freshman
Claire Brzenk roped a double to the centerfield wall that made it 3-0 as Jensen and
Brooke Heck both ran home.
In the second second, Seeber again led off with a single, dropping down a perfect bunt and beating the throw to first. Fellow second yearÂ
Breanna Bollig added the best kind of extra base hit, a two-run homer to center for a 5-0 advantage. It was a the team-leading fourth home run of the season for the Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, native. Brzenk made it 6-0 with a RBI single before the frame ended.
Another three-spot in the third pushed the lead to 9-0.
Ali Braddock opened with a double, and eventually scored on Bollig's single up the middle. Then Jensen ripped her second two-bagger of the game to bring in Seeber and Bollig.
Jensen (3-7) struck out a career-best ten batters to end a 16-game drought without a win in the circle, a stretch that went back to March 9 when the righthander opened the season 2-1. She held the Hawks to one unearned run on three hits and two walks.
At the plate, Jensen tied for team-high honors with three hits and three runs batted in, while also scoring a run. Seeber also had three hits and a team-best three runs scored. Bollig and Brzenk each had two hits and three RBI, with Bollig also tallying a pair of runs scored.
Game #2: Madison College 13, Harper College 1 (5 innings)
The finale saw the WolfPack score in every inning before the game was called via run rule for the second time that day.
Brenna Seeber stole home in the first to begin the scoring onslaught.
Ashley Kniesel, the native of Waterloo, Wisconsin, blooped a single into left to score
Breanna Bollig, and then scored herself on
Bailey Kratt's groundout to first base for a 3-0 lead.
The edge was stretched to eight runs in the second on three hits, one walk, and two errors. Sam Yaeger scored on Seeber's single to right. Seeber scored on an error by the pitcher. Kniesel singled home Burg, before Bollig scored on another a Bre Feilder groundout, and then a Harper College (13-19/2-10) error allowed Kniesel to add another.
After allowing a run in the top of the third, the WolfPack got it right back in the bottom half when a hit by pitch of Kniesel with the bases loaded advanced Yaeger to home. The 9-1 lead became 13-1 in the fourth on two hits and four walks, all in succession.
Kniesel and Yaeger each had two hits to lead the 'Pack. For Yaeger, a Madison, Wisconsin, native, the two hits were a season-high effort and matched a career-high from two games in 2016. Kniesel also had a team-leading three RBI, to go along with two runs scored. Seeber and Yaeger tied for team-honors with three runs each.
First year
Emily Wiederholt (7-3) picked up the win as she struck out six batters and allowed a run and three hits in four innings of work.
Mackenzie Terrill tossed an inning of relief with a walk and a strike out.
