FREEPORT, ILL. -
Hannah Wienen is enjoying a remarkable stretch of softball, as the freshman hurler teamed with fellow first year
Mackenzie Terrill to toss a no-hitter in game one of a road doubleheader split with Highland Community College on Saturday. The no-no was part of a 2-0 victory, the third straight for the WolfPack, who then fell by a 6-5 margin in walk-off fashion in the nightcap after a five-run rally in the final inning by the Cougars in the Region IV matchup.
Game #1: (RV) Madison College 2, Highland Community College 0
After throwing five no-hit innings on Friday against Carl Sandburg College,
Hannah Wienen kept right on rolling one day later. The Scales Mound, Illinois, native allowed two base runners, one via an error and the other on a walk, over her five innings of work. She exited the game with the WolfPack leading 2-0.
The first run came in the fourth when
Katelin Gilbertson followed up an
Ashley Kniesel double and
Bailey Kratt single with a line drive through the left side to score Kniesel. In the top of the sixth, Kniesel again doubled with
Brooke Heck aboard at first. Heck was thrown out trying to score on the play, but Kniesel, who advanced to third on the throw home, was able to score on a Kratt sacrifice fly for a 2-0 edge.
Freshman
Mackenzie Terrill then took over the no-hit bid in the sixth, and despite loading the bases on three walks, was able to keep the Cougars hitless and scoreless. The former Milton High School athlete also walked a batter in the seventh, but finished out the win and the WolfPack's third no-hitter of the season. For Terrill, it marked her third save of the year.
Hannah Wienen (5-3) finished with seven strikeouts opposite one walk. In back-to-back days, she has tossed ten no-hit innings with 16 K's, one run, and three walks.
Ashley Kniesel led the hitting attack with two hits and two runs scored, while four others also registered a hit.
Game #2: Highland Community College 6, (RV) Madison College 5
Madison College raced out to a 4-0 lead in game two, scoring two runs each in the first and third innings.
Brenna Seeber opened the game with a double to left, and two batters later it was Kniesel ripping another extra base hit to center. While Seeber scored ahead of a throw home, Kniesel kept running and was able to score on a throwing error by the shortstop. The third inning brought RBI singles from
Bailey Kratt and
Ali Braddock.
Starter
Emily Wiederholt maintained the advantage, but left the game in the third inning for reliever
Hannah Jensen. The sophomore allowed Highland Community College (13-8) to score their first run in the sixth when a walk and two singles loaded the bases, but a wild pitch allowed a runner to score.
The WolfPack got the run back in the seventh when first-year first baseball
Bre Feiler hit an opposite field single to bring in Kniesel from third. However, it all came unraveled in the seventh. The Cougars began the frame with a triple and a single to bring the deficit to three runs, and force coach
Leo Kalinowski to make a pitching change. He turned again to freshman
Mackenzie Terrill, who issued three walks and a double to make it a 5-4 game with bases loaded and one out. The sixth hitter to face Terrill ripped a double to right the scored two runs and ended the game in a walk-off.
Mackenzie Terrill took the loss and fell to 4-2 as she allowed three runs on two hits and three walk.
Emily Wiederholt and
Hannah Jensen took no decisions for their efforts, with Wiederholt holding Highland to two hits while striking out four. Jensen tossed four innings and surrendered three runs on four hits and a walk. She also struck out four.
Ali Braddock went 3-for-4 for the first three-hit game of her career. She was one of four players to record a RBI.
Ashley Kniesel had two hits, two runs scored, and one batted in.
