Madison College Softball lost twice to two NCAA Division III teams on their final day of their 2017 Florida spring trip. The WolfPack fell, 5-3, to Western Connecticut State University JV in game one and lost, 12-2, to Southwestern University in game two.
Game #1:Â Western Connecticut State University JV 5, Madison College 3
The WolfPack jumped on the board in the first inning and held a 1-0 lead to the bottom of the fourth inning. The Colonials scored two runs in the fourth inning but Madison College answered with two of their own in the top half of the fifth inning. With the score 3-2, in the bottom of the fifth, the Colonials took the lead for good with three runs on one hit, two walks and two errors. Western Connecticut went on to win, 5-3, capitalizing on four WolfPack errors, despite being outhit 9 to 6 by the 'Pack.
Second year players,
Brenna Seeber and
Brooke Heck, each had two hits to lead the WolfPack. Seeber was 2-for-3 with a double and
Brooke Heck was 2-for-4 with a double.
Hannah Jensen had the WolfPack's only RBI. First year righthander,
Hannah Wienen, received the loss as she pitched four and two-thirds giving up five hits and two earned runs. Wienen walked two and struck out six batters. Teammate and second year player,
Hannah Jensen, pitched in relief for an inning and a third. Jensen did not allow a run, only one hit, while posting one strikeout and one walk.
Game #2: Southwestern University JV 12, Madison College 2
In their second game of the day, the WolfPack once again got on the scoreboard first with one run in the first inning. That would be short lived as the Pirates put six runs on the board in the top of the second inning and never looked back. The 'Pack did not score again but Southwestern added six more runs to win, 12-2.
Second year players, Breanna Bollig and
Lindsey Bollig led the team in batting with two hits each. Breanna was 2-for-4 while Lindsey was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.
Ali Braddock,
Brooke Heck and
Emme Hilbert each had a double in the game.
First year pitcher,
Mackenzie Terrill, received the loss pitching two and a third innings, surrendering six hits and six earned runs while striking out four and walking three.
Hannah Jensen again appeared in relief, pitching four and two-thirds innings. Jensen gave up seven hits and four earned runs. She walked four and struck out five.
The two losses meant the WolfPack finished the 2017 spring trip with a respectable 8-5 mark. Madison College Softball is 12-7 as they head home. The next scheduled game for the 'Pack is a doubleheader against Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby, IL, on Friday, March 24.
