Jorge Medina is no stranger to being the first to accomplish something, especially as it pertains to playing soccer. Jorge found his way to the United States and Madison, Wisconsin from the island nation of Cape Verde on the western coast of Africa.

His arrival at Madison College coincided with the reinstatement of the men’s soccer program in 1998 after a six-year hiatus. Under the guidance of head coach Jeff Richardson, Medina and his teammates immediately made a statement with an 8-4-1 season that resulted in conference and state championships. A high-scoring offensive unit that produced a four-goals-per-game average featured eight assists and one goal from Jorge. He was rewarded with all-conference honors and the team finished ranked 23rd in the nation.

Jorge returned to Madison College for the 1999 season and made history, becoming the first player in program history to earn All-American accolades. He produced six goals and 15 assists to set the school record for career and single-season assists. Jorge and the WolfPack went 19-3 on the season, repeating as conference and state champions. Unlike the previous season, 9th-ranked Madison College was able to win its first Region 13 title to qualify for the District Championship and was a win away from reaching the national tournament. In addition to the All-American honor, Jorge was also named all-conference, all-state, and all-region.

In his two years at Madison College, Jorge’s teams went 27-7-1, winning two conference titles, two state championships, and one region banner. Nearly 25 years later, his 22 career assists still rank second in school history. His 15 assists as a sophomore are still the third-best single-season total.

Jorge’s accomplishments also stretched beyond the pitch, as his work in the classroom during the 1999-2000 school year yielded Academic All-Conference and Academic All-State recognition. He was also an Academic All-American nominee.

After the 1999 season, coach Richardson described Jorge as “a very skilled player, and an excellent overall student-athlete. His competitive nature combined with a strong work ethic led him to all the honors that he has received.”

Richardson added in 2023, "Jorge was a superb student-athlete whose on and off-field leadership motivated his teammates to draw inner strength and resolve."

Jorge, who continues to live in Madison, went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Architectural Drafting, and he has spent the past five years working as a carpenter.

When asked about his experience at Madison College, Jorge said, “It helped me establish myself in the community.”

And now, there is one more first to celebrate when it comes to Jorge Medina: the first men's soccer player inducted into the Madison College Athletic Hall of Fame.
