JOLIET, ILL. - A four-set win to open North Central Community College Conference play will also bring an end to a six-match road-trip that started the season for the Madison College volleyball team. Behind a career-effort from sophomore
Megan Corcoran, the WolfPack rallied from an early one-set deficit to take the match with scores of 21-25, 25-11, 25-21, and 25-15 over Joliet Junior College on Tuesday night. The win marks the second consecutive year the 'Pack has opened league play with a victory, and gives them a dozen straight wins and a 14-2 mark all-time against JJC.
Madison College did not get off on the right foot against the Wolves, who forced the WolfPack into a season-low -.025 hitting percentage in the opening set. The visitors converted nine kills on 40 attempts with ten hitting errors. Those numbers steadily improved over the match, with the overall attack percentage finishing over .300 in the final two sets.
Corcoran, a 5'10" outside hitter, tallied a career-best 18 kills while hitting a season-high .220. The impressive showing ends a stretch of three-straight matches with fewer than ten kills for the Madison, Wisconsin, native. Corcoran's also delivered defensively with a team-high six blocks.
Freshmen
Paige Hostetler and
Mariah Capra both registered seven kills in the win, with Capra hitting a team-leading .400.
The offensive effort also saw setter
Keely Brown dish out a season-high 23 assists. Fellow setter
Olivia Darkow finished with 11 assists. Brown, Darkow, and first year libero/defensive specialist
Kendra Nicolay all served up three aces, part of a season-high ten for the WolfPack.
The 'Pack also set a season-high mark for their work in the defensive back row with 67 digs. Freshman
Maddie Scalissi worked her way to 24 digs, her highest total of the year and her fourth match in double-figures. Also in double-digits in the dig category was Nicolay with 11 and Brown with 10, giving the Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native her first double-double of the season.
