MADISON, WISC. - The duo of
Shane Waldon and
Tyree Young carried the Madison College men's basketball team to its largest North Central Community College Conference victory of the season, 92-65 over the College of DuPage at Redsten Gymnasium on Wednesday. The team's fourth straight win secured the WolfPack's best finish ever in conference play, and it comes in the first year under head coach
Bill Kegler. The previous best was a third place finish at 7-7 in 2009-10 when Madison College joined the league.
Freshman
Tyree Young set the pace in the first half, beginning with a three-pointer that gave Madison College (18-9, 10-3) a 13-11 lead, one they would never surrender. He immediately followed it up with converting a WolfPack steal into an alley-oop finished off by
Shane Waldon. Those two scores were part of a 12-2 run that was soon followed by a 14-1 surge for a 47-33 halftime advantage.
Madison College blew the game open in the second half when the
Shane Waldon Show produced ten points in a matter of two minutes. It began with back-to-back steals and dunks, the first of which was an and-1. Following a circus three-point play in transition by Young, Waldon scored on a spin move through the lane and completed the run with another steal for yet another successful basket and a foul to make it 66-43. Freshman reserve
Jeffrey Marcum added his name to the dunk contest list with his own powerful punch late in the game.
Madison College shot a season-best 60.8-percent on 31-of-51 shooting and matched a season-high mark for three-point percentage (57.1%) set in the fourth game of the season. The WolfPack converted 8-of-14 tries from long range and were successful on 22-of-30 free throws. The home team was also ten points better in the paint (40-30) and capitalized on 19 DuPage (4-21, 4-9) turnovers with 32 points.
Waldon finished with a game-high 29 points, going 11-for-14 from the field and 7-for-8 from the line. Young tallied a career-high 23 points and was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point territory. The duo tied for team-high honors with five rebounds each, while Young dished out a career-best six assists and Waldon nabbed a team-leading three steals. For Waldon, a native of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, he now has nine games with 20 or more points to boost his average to 18.3 points a game. For Young, his 19th game scoring in double-figures has raised his average from 6.0 to 12.2.
Freshman
Jezzriah Burton registered 11 points, hitting a pair of three-pointers. Ten of the 11 WolfPack players that saw game action were also able to score as part of a third win in the last four games against the Chaparrals, who now lead the all-time series by a single victory at 10-9.
The regular season finale will bring a visit from defending national champion Rock Valley College (21-8, 9-4) on Saturday. The
#7 Golden Eagles trail the WolfPack by one game in the N4C standings after losing 91-80 Wednesday to #1 Triton College, who claimed their fourth consecutive league crown. Madison College defeated RVC
73-67 last month to snap an eight-game losing streak in the head-to-head series, and can now play for its first regular season sweep since 2010-11. Tip off is at 3:00 p.m.
Saturday will be Sophomore Day, as the WolfPack say goodbye to three players in their final home games, and the
11th Annual Jam the Gym celebration and alumni weekend. The festivities will begin at 10:30 a.m.
The game will be broadcast live on
MadisonCollege.TV and via the Madison College Athletics
Facebook page.
