CASA GRANDE, ARIZ. - The Madison College baseball team owns its first winning streak of the 2016 season after sweeping a doubleheader against Williston State College (ND) by scores of 16-5 and 7-4 on Thursday. The #2 WolfPack collected 23 runs on 20 hits, including the season's first two home runs, while playing at Vista Grande High School.
Game #1: Madison College 16, Williston State College 5Hoping to carry over momentum from Wednesday's dramatic win over #12 Seminole State College (OK), Madison College used the long ball to jump on Williston State early in the first game of a twin bill. With a runner on and two outs in the top of the first, redshirt freshman
Chris Lund smashed the season's first home run over the left field wall. The homer is also the first of Lund's collegiate career. The WolfPack made it 3-0 before the inning was over when
Ronnie Cross followed a Tetons error with a run-scoring double.
An inning later, Lund was at it again. The former Stoughton Viking stepped to the plate with runners at second and third - and again with two outs - to deliver a two-RBI double to left for a 5-0 edge.
Madison College added another run in the third and again in the fourth, with the latter featuring Lund coming in to score. The fifth inning brought a chance to end the game early as five walks, one hit batter, and one hit created four runs and an 11-0 lead. However, the 'Pack was unable to shut the door on WSC, giving up four runs in the bottom half on three hits, two errors, and two walks.
The final tallies came in the seventh as Madison College put together three straight extra base hits, the first of which was a bases clearing triple by freshman
Ian Parentice.
Lund and Parentice tied for team-high honors with four RBI on two hits apiece. Parentice also scored three times, while Lund crossed home twice. Two other players had multiple hits, six scored at least two runs, and four had crooked numbers in the runs batted in column.
On the hill,
Brandon Parr (1-1) notched his first win, holding the Tetons to three earned runs on four hits. He struck out nine in five innings.
Peyton Durst tossed two innings of one-run, one-hit baseball with four strikeouts in relief.
Game #2: Madison College 7, Williston State College 4
The nightcap picked up right where the opener left off, with Madison College scoring early and often. Nate Schmidt started with a rare steal of home on a perfectly executed double steal in the second inning.
In the fourth, redshirt freshman first baseman Ty Jandrowski set the tone with a blast beyond the right field wall to lead off the frame. It was the first career homer for the Kenosha, Wisconsin, native. The WolfPack would hit around in the inning, scoring six runs on four hits for a 7-0 lead.
It stayed that way until the top of the sixth when Madison College pitching issued three walks to load the bases and then a triple to clear them. The Tetons (6-11) kept the pressure on and made the potential WolfPack sweep dicey in the seventh, putting the game's tying run on first base. However, left-hander Ty Jandrowski moved from first base to the pitcher's mound to help slam the door shut and pick up his second save in as many days.
Lefty Alec Haluzak (2-0) was solid in winning his second straight start, pitching 5 2/3 innings with one earned run on five hits. The product of Wilmot Union HS struck out four and has allowed just two earned runs in his first 11-plus innings of work to start the season.
At the dish, Drew Steinmetz and Nick Kanavas each went 2-for-4, with the former picking up one run scored and another driven in and the latter with two RBI. Nate Schmidt had a team-high two runs scored.
Madison College (4-6) will finish their Arizona Spring Trip with a Friday doubleheader against Gateway Community College (AZ). The Geckos are 19-9 on the season. Due to scheduling conflicts at the Gene Autry Sports Complex, the games will be played at Scottsdale Community College in Scottsdale, Arizona. Game one has a first pitch of 2:00 p.m. Central Time.Follow Madison College baseball on: GameChanger | Facebook | Twitter
