Late surge propels Glendale past #2 WolfPack

Bullpen surrenders seven runs over two innings

GLENDALE, ARIZ. - Another close game grew lopsided late as the Madison College baseball team returned from their lone off day in Arizona to drop a 10-3 matchup at Glendale Community College. The #2 WolfPack left six runners in scoring position and committed two errors on Monday.

The Gauchos got to first year starter Sam Lund in the first inning, plating two runs on a pair of walks, one hit, and an error. Both teams scored a run in the second inning to make it 3-1. The WolfPack's tally was the result of Nate Schmidt singling to center, stealing second, and advancing on a error. He scored on a fielder's choice to the right side off the bat of Zach Bailey.

In the third, Madison College (1-4) pulled within a run in the third thanks to a lead off walk to Nick Kanavas and consecutive singles from Ty Jandrowski and Chris Lund, who registered his second RBI of the season.

It remained 3-2 until the WolfPack turned to the bullpen and Glendale Community College (11-16) took advantage. First year transfer Riley Pawelski started the seventh inning and served up five hits to the first six batters he faced, highlighted by a three-run home run as part of a four-run frame. The lead grew to 10-3 in the eighth when fellow first year Peyton Durst allowed three runs on three hits, including a solo blast to left field.

The 'Pack collected 11 hits, led by a 3-for-4 effort from transfer infielder Nate Schmidt. Kian O'Brien entered the game late to go 2-for-2 with a double. Sophomore Nick Kanavas walked twice and was 1-for-3 at the plate, including a triple to lead off the game. He was unable to score.

Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native Sam Lund tossed six innings of five-hit ball in his first career start. The righthander allowed one earned run, struck out six batters, and issued three walks. The bullpen combine to give up seven earned runs on nine hits in just two innings.

On Tuesday the WolfPack travel to Coolidge, Arizona, for a doubleheader of seven-inning games against Central Arizona College. The NJCAA Division I Vaqueros enter with a 24-3 record. The action begins at 2:00 p.m. Central Time.
