Box Score For the second year in a row, and third time in the last four seasons, the Madison College baseball team has finished third at the NJCAA Division II World Series. Friday evening, the WolfPack were eliminated by Hinds Community College (Miss.), falling 12-6.
The 'Pack would start off strong, scoring three runs through the first three innings. In the top of the second, a
Sam Hurt single to right scored
Dylan Detert. Then, in the third, an error scored
Keith Browning before
Luke Yapp drove in
Dan Schmidt with a single to left.
Trailing 3-0, the Eagles would charge ahead, scoring four runs in the bottom of the third. The runs came as the result of a pair of singles, a sac fly and an error. Hinds Community College would lead it 4-3 after three complete.
It would remain 4-3 Eagles until the top of the fifth inning. There, Browning hammered a solo home run to left, tying the game at 4-4.
Unfortunately, Hinds Community College would respond in a big way in the bottom of the fifth. The Eagles would put up eight runs in the inning and lead it 12-4 entering the sixth.
There was no quit in Madison College, as the team tried to chip away at the eight-run deficit the rest of the night. The 'Pack would put up one run in both the sixth and seventh inning, both scores coming off a fielder's choice, but the hole proved to be too deep for Madison to climb out of.
Neither team would score from that point forward, resulting in the 12-6 Eagles victory. The WolfPack would finish with 11 hits, while Hinds compiled 13.
Corey Fischer took the loss for Madison College. Fischer threw four and two-thirds innings, allowing nine hits and seven earned runs.
The loss ends the 2014 season for the WolfPack, as well as the Madison College careers of 11 sophomores. The WolfPack finished with a 45-17 overall record, including an 11-1 mark in conference competition.
