In the first game of the Jack Howell Classic at the Kino Baseball Complex in Tucson, AZ, Madison College got back to .500 at 3-3 with a come from behind 8-4 victory over the Northeastern Junior College Plainsmen.
The WolfPack got on the board right away with a run in the bottom of first, but the Plainsmen knotted up the game with a run of their own in the third and pulled ahead when they plated two runs in the fourth. Down 3-1, the Madison College bats finally came alive in the top of the fifth inning with three runs, followed by three more in the sixth inning for the 8-3 lead. Northeastern scored a run to close the gap in the sixth inning but Madison College tacked on a run of their own and the Plainsmen couldn't score again as the WolfPack walked away with the 8-4 victory.
Quintin Zander started for the WolfPack, lasted three innings, and left the game with Northeastern up 3-1. Casey Doucette took over on the hill and pitched a solid three innings. After two dominating frames, Doucette started to run into trouble. With one Northeastern run already across the plate, the bases loaded, and two out; Chardukian's diving catch of a line drive to centerfield thwarted any chance of a Plainsmen comeback in the frame. Overall, Doucette gave up one run on two hits in picking up the win, thanks in part to Chardukian.
Several WolfPack contributed at the plate as Madison College belted 12 hits in the four run win. Tanner Vavra led the team with three hits in four at bats, and drove in a run. Cleanup hitter Andrew Wasmund and leadoff man Trevor Burmeister executed their roles perfectly as they both recorded two hits, and five others added a hit. Wasmund went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Burmeister finished the day 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. He also walked twice and stole a base. Others finishing with steals were Luke Maldonado, Tanner Vavra, Chardukian, and Wasmund.
The 3-3 Madison College WolfPack have five more games in the Jack Howell Classic at the Kino Baseball Complex, including two tomorrow. The WolfPack faces the Hill College Rebels of Hillsboro, TX at 8:30 AM and the Williston State College Tetons of Williston, ND at 11:00 AM.
