Mike Heller graduated from Madison East High School in 1982, where he participated in basketball and volleyball. He came to MATC where he easily found his niche as a basketball player. At the end of his first year he was named Most Improved Player, shooting at 52% from the floor, and a 70% from the line. The Trojans finished as State Champs and took second place in the Region. His sophomore year, Mike contributed his intelligent brand of basketball, which mirrored his academic progress as a good student. He was not only the team's defensive player of the year, but also the assist leader, and captain. Mike's coach, Jack Brenegan, described him the same way, "Mike was an excellent student, and a great young man. He was a very unselfish and smart player, as well as a true team leader." Mike was the MATC Sportsperson of the Year back in 1984, and also was a member of the student activities board.

Mike went on to earn a degree from the UW-Madison in economics and mathematics. While at the UW, he played for the men's volleyball club team where he was named All-Conference in 1984-1986, and was named MVP for the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association in 1985. A past president and treasure of the UW-Men's Volleyball Club, Mike coached freshman and JV basketball at his alma mater, Madison East, and then the UW-Rock County team before returning to MATC to coach the Trojans club volleyball team. Mike was an employee for a computer systems specialist and network manager at Promega Corporation, Madison. At Promega, he has helped organize the Promega Basketball Marathon from 1992-1997 to raise funds for the American Cancer Society and the American Red Cross. Sharing in Mike's joy is his wife, Jeanne-Bordeau Heller.
